As a Heavy Equipment Operator - Apprentice for PCL Solar Constructors, Inc., you will contribute to our team by:

  • Safely use Hand & Power Tools.

  • Work safely at all times and promote safety to others around you.

  • Perform quality work as determined by your supervisor and project specifications.

  • Accountable for all tools and materials at the end of your shift.

  • Must work well as part of a team.

  • Keep a clean work area as well as clean tools, equipment, and material.

  • Assist immediate supervisor with aligning future tasks to be completed.

  • Read and interpret drawings, operating and machine instructions and manuels to determine work procedures.

  • Properly set up machine before beginning work.

  • Plan and layout inventory from the warehouse as directed.

  • Document maintenance logs on assigned equipment.

  • Operate gasoline, diesel, pneumatic, or electrical powered equipment to move objects or material according to project specifications.

  • Perform maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, and oiling machines and equipment.

  • Scoop, lift, swing, or dump material. Dig, spread, and level dirt and gravel.

  • Properly set up machine before installing piles.

  • Effectively communicate with pile tender beforeand during installation of piles.

  • Properly set-up and use lasers and receivers for pile elevation hights.

  • Selects type and size of related materials according to the job specifications.

  • Plans sequence of activities to avoid obstructions and activities of other construction workers.

  • Understand and implement Red Tag procedures relating to equipment in a safe manner.

  • Assist in checking that areas are barricaded and travel paths are clear.

  • Work within all PCL and client guidelines.

  • Load and unload trucks and/or rail cars.

  • Prioritize tasks according to job schedule and direction.

  • Identify and assemble all necessary materials and equipment for a particular task and deliver those items where they are needed on the project site.

  • Keep track of all components and materials for your project tasks.

  • Participate fully in health, safety, quality, and environmental processes.

What you will bring to the role:

Skills:

  • Some math knowledge and skills as related to the job tasks. Able to add, subtract, multiple, and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.

  • Able to effectively use verbal and written communication skills.

  • Able to read and understand plans and specifications including orthographic and isometric drawings.

  • Successfully complete the appropriate PCL skills assessment tests.

  • Ability to understand and follow directions.

Education:

  • Must be willing to attend and successfully complete continued training applicable to the job as deemed necessary by PCL. Training may include the NCCER curriculum, other third party courses, and PCL or PCL developed classes.

  • Must have valid driver’s license or other government issued identification.

Physical:

  • Must comply with PCL’s drug and alcohol abuse policy.

  • Must be able to pass physical examination, pre-employment if necessary, and as required by PCL.

  • Able to climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding, and stairways.

  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces (towers, vessels, excavations, etc.)

  • Able to carry 50 lbs. of tools and/or materials. PCL policy requires getting assistance to lift items over 50 lbs. Check with your project supervisor or project safety director.

  • Must be able to work a 10 hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside weather conditions.

  • Must be able to work extended hours on your feet on uneven surfaces (dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.).

  • Must be able to work while wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment, when required.

  • Must work all hours needed at the jobsite and possible weekends with short notice.

Safety/Environment:

  • Must be able to pass applicable site-specific training.

  • Must undertake the appropriate safety/environmental training commensurate with the position and location.

  • Understand and implement lockout/tagout procedures as needed or directed in a safe manner.

  • CPR and 1st Aid trained when required.

  • Must be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs, labels, and permits in English.
