Montezuma County Administration Assistant County Attorney in Cortez, Colorado

JOB SUMMARY:

Under direction of the Montezuma County Attorney, the Assistant County Attorney will perform a variety of administrative, technical, and professional legal services as the primary legal advisor to the Montezuma County Department of Human Services. This includes prosecuting dependency and neglect cases, and representing the Department of Human Services in child support enforcement and adult protection cases.

The Assistant County Attorney shall be under the supervision and direction of the Montezuma County Attorney. The position is a full-time (30 hours per week), exempt position and includes benefits. Salary depends on experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  1. Perform a variety of complex administrative, technical, and professional work in advising and representing the Montezuma County Department of Human Services.

  2. Advise the Montezuma County Department of Human Services in matters related to child abuse and/or neglect investigations, dependency and neglect proceedings, adult protection investigations and proceedings, child support services, and records requests and subpoenas.

  3. Represent the Montezuma County Department of Human Services in court proceedings, including review hearings, evidentiary hearings, jury trials, bench trials, and appellate proceedings.

  4. Conduct legal research, prepare trial court pleadings, and draft appellate court briefs in support of the Montezuma County Department of Human Services.

  5. Meet with caseworkers, legal technicians, and supervisors during case staffing s and assist in the development of case plans, treatment plans, and safety plans.

  6. Maintain professional competence by attending related, ongoing continuing legal education trainings.

  7. Assist the County Attorney with legal research and/or other tasks related to the representation of the County Board of Commissioners and/or Department heads.

  8. Other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Ability to research Colorado statutes, court rules including appellate rules, rules of evidence, and rules of ethics is mandatory. Knowledge of the Colorado Children s Code, child protection proceedings, and statutory provisions related to child support is preferred.

  2. Mandatory ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. The Assistant County Attorney must also have the ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, clients, court representatives, other attorneys, and members of the public.

  3. An ability to process factual information effectively and an ability to apply legal rules to factual situations is mandatory. The Assistant County Attorney must also have the ability to work effectively when faced with high volumes of work, multiple deadlines, and frequent interruptions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school is required. The Assistant County Attorney must be licensed to practice law in Colorado and must be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Colorado.

One to four years of relevant work experience and/or a working knowledge of trial practice, dependency and neglect cases, and the Colorado Children s Code is preferred.

SALARY RANGE:
