Union County College Assistant Dean of Social Sciences, Business and History in Cranford, New Jersey

Union County College is a public comprehensive community college providing quality, affordable, accessible educational programs that serve the greater Union County region. It is the oldest of New Jerseys 19 Associate Degree Colleges, serving both career-minded and transfer-oriented students since 1933. The College enrolls almost 30,000 credit, non-credit and continuing education students and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Many programs lead to the Associate in Arts, Science and Applied Science degrees.

General Description:

Under the direction of the Academic Dean, Assistant Academic Deans provide support to the Academic Deans in the areas of staffing classes, curriculum revision and development, technology, and assessment, with a focus on academic excellence. The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Academic Dean are to hire, supervise and evaluate adjunct faculty and develop course schedules. The Assistant Academic Dean will assist the Dean in achieving institutional goals and will embrace change and contribute to student success initiatives. As part of a leadership culture that is focused on planning, student success, and institutional advocacy, the Assistant Dean will possess a strong commitment to innovation and excellence combined with effective change strategies while contributing to strategic planning efforts.

Characteristics, Duties and Responsibilities:

· Hire, supervise and evaluate adjunct faculty.

· Orient adjunct faculty to the Division.

· Review course syllabi with adjunct faculty.

· Collaborate with adjunct faculty to strengthen all aspects of the instructional role with an emphasis on supporting pedagogy that engages students.

· Develop Division course schedules.

· Assure that all elements of Program Assessment are completed.

· Advance Professional Development opportunities in conjunction with Division faculty

· Develop and maintain Division web site.

· Monitor enrollment reports of all scheduled courses within the Division.

· Assist Academic Dean in preparation of academic year-end reports.

· Address student concerns through collaboration with the Student Development Division or individual faculty as appropriate.

· Manage the advisory committee process for all career programs within the Division.

· Participate in grant development and administration.

· Serve on Committees as assigned.

· Performs additional duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:

  • Master’s degree required

Experience:

  • Teaching experience required, community college teaching preferred

  • Three years of progressive administrative experience in higher education preferred.

  • Experience in planning, coordination and on-going improvement of curriculum and instruction preferred.

  • Experience in outcomes assessment preferred.

Competencies and Skills Required:

  • Teaching experience required, community college teaching preferred

  • Three years of progressive administrative experience in higher education preferred.

  • Experience in planning, coordination and on-going improvement of curriculum and instruction preferred.

  • Experience in outcomes assessment preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

· This position’s duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.

· Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

· No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

· Some travel is required.
