UPMC Registered Nurse, CVU in Cumberland, Maryland

As a Casual Registered Nurse with the CVU, you’ll be a key member of our care delivery team, setting high standards for patient care. You’ll have the responsibility, authority, and accountability to provide top-notch nursing care, managing patient care activities with independent judgment and collaboration with the entire team.

In this casual, as-needed position, you’ll work at least 36 hours every six weeks and be required to work one holiday per year. In this role, you’ll lead, partner, collaborate, and supervise to ensure the best outcomes for patients and their families. You’ll build strong relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families, working together to achieve desired patient outcomes. Responsibilities:

  • Pati ent Care:

  • Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment.

  • Formulates daily goals and care plans for patients, involving them as partners and considering their holistic needs.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues.

  • Practices solid communication skills, articulating and translating patient conditions to other care providers.

  • Negotiates and recommends changes in patient care and unit practices.

  • Ensures comprehensive patient documentation to promote communication between caregivers.

  • Incorporates goals from national professional organizations, business units, and health systems to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.

  • Creates a caring and compassionate patient-focused experience by building healing relationships.

  • Relationships and Communication:

  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally.

  • Demonstrates accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.

  • Understands cultural differences and holds peers accountable for healthy relationships.

  • Maintains a balance between work and personal life.

  • Teaching and Education:

  • Provides detailed and appropriate teaching to guide patients and families through care episodes and transitions.

  • Supports the development of students, new staff, and colleagues; may serve as a preceptor.

  • Creates an environment of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous development by seeking feedback and improving practice.

  • Professional Development:

  • Demonstrates accountability for professional development to improve the quality of practice and patient care.

  • Actively participates in unit-based shared governance and goal setting.

  • Supports change and transition processes to improve care quality and the practice environment.

  • Quality Improvement:

  • Actively participates in department or unit-specific quality improvement efforts.

  • Identifies opportunities for quality improvement and discusses them with colleagues and management.

  • Takes personal responsibility for improving patient satisfaction with care and service quality.

  • Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support clinical care improvements.

  • Identifies research issues or articles related to clinical specialties or areas of interest.

  • Discusses quality improvement opportunities at multidisciplinary rounds.

  • Influences patients’ plans of care based on quality improvement discussions.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills for providing care and interacting with patients of various ages.

  • Understand principles of growth and development over the lifespan.

  • Assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs.

  • Minimum 1 year of experience required.

  • BSN preferred.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with:

  • Executives

  • Managers

  • Physicians

  • Non-physician providers

  • Ancillary and support staff

  • Other departments

  • Patients and families

  • Work productively and effectively in a complex environment.

  • Handle multiple and changing priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Exhibit good clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Lead others in applying the nursing process.

  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
