We are looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer to serve as subject matter expert with strong expertise in power systems to join the Corporate Engineering team. The incumbent will report directly to the Sr. Director of Engineering Excellence. This role will provide subject matter and trouble-shooting expertise to our sites in power distribution and will lead/support capital projects at our manufacturing facilities throughout the GAF organization.
The Electrical Engineering SME must have a strong understanding of the design of building and process equipment electrical distribution systems across all design phases, from conceptual design and scope to installation. They should also have a working knowledge of how various codes and standards are applied throughout this process, namely NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and ANSI. The Electrical Subject Matter Expert will need to have a broad understanding of electrical systems and equipment function. The candidate will need to be experienced in Low Voltage & Medium Voltage power distribution, electrical protection & controls systems, UPS and battery systems, electrical testing, Electrical Studies (Arc Flash, Short Circuit, Equipment Integrity, and Relay Coordination), applicable electrical codes and standards, and have a basic understanding of mechanical systems. Controls expertise is a plus.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Manage the GAF electrical infrastructure capital plan, focusing on reducing risk of safety and obsolescence issues.
Integrate an understanding of power system operations with industrial production processes to review and identify issues in power distribution. Provide this analysis in project development and drive engineered solutions for power distribution and to eliminate potential failures.
Manage all aspects of electrically-focused major projects including design construction, vendor management, cost tracking, operational interfaces and operations preparation, and startup for assigned projects. Support other Project Leaders in electrical system matters during design, installation and commissioning as required.
Lead/participate in cross-functional corporate and plant teams investigating opportunities to improve and expand GAF’s processes and capabilities
Collaborate with other Electrical distribution and control SMEs to develop intimate working knowledge & standards for GAF electrical design specifications.
Provide subject matter expertise in power systems through studies and project development incorporating modeling and development of the transmission system. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, transient stability and potential for short circuits. GAF utilizes SKM Power Tools for this analysis.
Provide oversight and support with Manufacturing sites one-line diagrams and arc flash studies. Ensure equipment and site electrical drawings are updated and kept current. Also, to maintain these documents (Electrical models and Single Lines) in a centralized file depository.
Provide crisis management electrical expertise as needed. Other duties as assigned.
Technical Skills
Strong Electrical design and code compliance understanding, different electrical calculation standards (namely NEC, IEEE, and ANSI) and customer experience knowledge
Hands-on experience with SKM Power Tools (or equivalent) for documenting and reviewing the site’s electrical systems.
Theoretical and practical understanding of power equipment & systems, with expertise in electrical equipment design, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and/or construction
Familiarity with and/or ability to outline the process for the following calculations: Load calculations, ampacity sizing of electrical equipment, arc flash, short circuit, selective coordination.
Advanced ability to recommend and implement technical solutions for cross-functional projects.
Ability to identify minimum cost, maximum return solutions
Excellent recordkeeping, as well as written and verbal communication skills.
Working knowledge of standard manufacturing concepts, practices, & procedures
Advanced ability to read and interpret specifications and drawings
Working proficiency using root cause analysis and Kepner-Trego or other structured methods to troubleshoot and solve problems
Advanced ability to translate technical data into a format/language suitable for operations and maintenance personnel
Advanced proficiency in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatics

Demonstrated leadership in terms of capital project planning, development, and execution including conceptual design, detailed design, construction and installation coordination, technical training, and turnover, start-up support, and sustained ownership.

Under This Roof, We Require
A BS in Electrical Engineering (Would consider BSEET)coupled with a minimum of 15+ years of experience.
Experience with Electrical design, power distribution, and exposure to controls integration.
Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplines as project manager and supervise others as a lead engineer.
Demonstrated ability to work with and provide expertise in maintenance, operations, and process.
Willingness and ability to travel up to 50%.
Under This Roof, We Also Value
5 years in a roofing/building products manufacturing organization - (preferred)
Electrical license as a professional engineer
Thorough knowledge and experience with computers and G Suite/MSOffice. Drafting experience with CAD, preferably Autodesk products, is preferred.
The preferred location for the position is remote, located within one hour of a large or major airport.
