Operate computer and mechanically controlled machine tools to manufacture and repair complex, high-precision tolerance parts, tools, and fixtures where the design can be variable requiring the use of judgment, knowledge and machining skills. Can operate most or all machines within the shop.

Day-to-Day Role:

  • Follow and commit to meet Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for safety, quality, production, efficiency, and service requirements

  • Follow practices and processes intended to provide safe products that comply with appropriate laws and regulations, meet the company quality standards

  • Follow and commit to safety and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)

  • Machine complex components within high-precision tolerances

  • Analyze, conclude, and recommend new or revised processes or products

  • Conduct root cause analysis resulting in enhancements to original functionality and design

  • Set up and operate conventional, special purpose or numerical control machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts and fits and assembles machined parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machine-ability of material and layout techniques

  • Inspect, repair and rebuild parts within a variety of metal-working machine operations involving complex, high tolerances

  • Determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and setup requirements

  • Fabricate parts using standard machinist equipment including lathe, grinders, milling machine, or drill presses

  • Detect malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjust machine controls or control media as required

  • Read, understand, and interpret blueprints, schematics, specifications, bills of material, and various technical references as required

  • Utilize SAP to retrieve tooling and parts

  • Set up and run CNC, engine lathe, vertical mill, surface grinder/knife grinder, tool post, jig grinder, drill press, saws (both horizontal and vertical), and/or hydraulic press

  • May program CNC machine tools in the course of making parts

  • Grind and/or sharpen cutting tools

  • Make layouts on parts to assist machining and/or assembly operations

  • Use inspection gages (micrometers, height gages, bore gages, calipers, etc.) to inspect all machined parts for accuracy

  • Proof programs without assistance

  • Recommend work procedures for fabricating new parts, evaluate experimental procedures, and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency and adaptability to setup and production

  • Serve as a technical resource for less experienced Machinists

  • Apply advanced, complex troubleshooting

  • Lead process improvement initiatives and/or cross functional team projects

  • Train other Machinists

  • Use SAP Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Work Order Process

    Core Skills and Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate must possess all of the following:

  • Six (6) years of experience in machining, or comparable experience with trade school

  • Experience setting up and operating computer and mechanically controlled machine tools such as CNC mill, lathe, grinder, drill press, hydraulic press, etc.

  • Ability to efficiently run machining and metal fabrication equipment with high precision

  • Able to cut, bend, drill, and weld metals

  • Able to run CNC machine and edit G-Code

  • Expert knowledge of various metals and measurements used in machining processes

  • Advanced knowledge of metrology methods and tools

  • Capable of using inspection gages (micrometers, height gages, bore gages, calipers, etc.)

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings

  • Math skills to include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and algebra

  • Familiar with and ability to convert decimals to fractions or vice versa

  • Familiar with and ability to convert units (imperial to SI, etc.)

  • Ability to read and understand complex math and angles

  • Advanced mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot complex problems including knowledge of machines and tools, their designs, and uses

  • Ability to obtain and maintain powered industrial truck (PIT) license

  • Demonstration of minimum proficiency with the English language in order to ensure effective new hire training and on-going communications about safety and quality issues

    Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • NIMS Certification

  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment

  • SAP experience

  • PIT experience
