Job Description:

The Center for Engineering Innovation ( CEI ) seeks a Research Scientist to lead effort into advanced additive manufacturing concepts and applications. The Research Scientist will develop funded research programs around fundamental and applied additive manufacturing materials and systems. The Research Scientist will lead a team of chemists, CAD designers, and mechanical engineers to explore nascent concepts toward industrially viable and translatable technologies. With a clear focus on building America’s industrial capacity, the Research Scientist will also oversee the development and capture of pre-competitive intellectual property (patents) and work directly with industry partners to commercialize these technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in field directly related to research – Two (2) years of experience/expertise performing research relating to a specified field of study – Or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience totaling at least eight years.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • A PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering

  • 5+ years academic experience after graduation (postdoc, research scientist or professor)

  • 10+ years industrial experience

  • Extensive experience with publications, patents and grant management

  • The candidate will be expected to lead a team with varying backgrounds as well as to interact efficiently with the business community. The candidate will be expected to develop an independently funded research program from both governmental and industrial sources. Effective communication (both written and oral) to audiences (academic and commercial) is essential.

  • The candidate will be expected to publish academic results while simultaneously identifying and protecting intellectual property as it is discovered. Thus, an established track record of academic publishing as well as patent prosecution (drafting and defending) is required.
