Summary This position is performs journeyman-level installation, maintenance and repair, and preventive maintenance of electrical systems throughout the Dayton VA Medical Center and is located within the Engineering Service under the supervision of the Electrical Maintenance Unit Supervisor. Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited too: Maintain, repair, install, and test switchgear, automatic transfer switches, transformers, and switchboard meters. Maintain, repair, test, and install electrical motors, generators, alternators, and electrical control systems. Install electrical conduits for new equipment or for movement or replacement of existing machinery and equipment Repair fixed equipment such as laundry washers, extractors, dryers, electric saws, drill presses, and blowers. Repair motors and appliances such as fans, vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, coffee urns, etc. Install, modify, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, test, and load new and existing electrical lines, circuits and systems. Work from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, electrical code specifications and repair manuals. Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs 480 volt street lighting circuits to include splicing cables and re-setting light posts. Responds to trouble calls regarding blown fuses, broken switches, grounded and shorted circuits and makes necessary repairs. Installs, maintains, and calibrates industrial instrumentation and related devices. Qualifications You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Ability to do the work of this position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN-OUT) Knowledge of electrical equipment Technical Practices (Electrical) Ability to use electric drawings Ability to use and maintain hand tools (Electrical Work) Skill in troubleshooting (Electrical) Physical Effort & Work Conditions: Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard-to-reach places. This requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The work requires frequently lifting and carrying of tools, equipment and parts that weight up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds. The work is performed both inside and outside. The electrician is sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather and work in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 feet or more and in close quarters such as manholes and attics. There is exposure to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and injuries from rotary devices such as electrical motors and is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.
