Ford Motor Company Vehicle Thermal Systems CAE Engineer in Dearborn, Michigan

The Vehicle Thermal Systems CAE section is responsible for analyzing the vehicle climate system that cools and heats the vehicle cabin and battery. Members of the section use various CAE methods to quantify component and system level design impacts on climate system performance and power consumption. Specific studies may include refrigerant subsystem analysis, heater subsystem analysis, front end airflow, power consumption analysis, and review of physical test data.

  • Perform 1D/3D thermal/fluid CAE simulations at the system, subsystem, and component levels of vehicle thermal systems, both ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) as well as BEV, FHEV, and PHEV using commercial and Ford internal CAE software

  • Work with component and system engineers and provide technical guidance

  • Develop and apply CAE methods to support product development and virtual test signoff

  • Work with software suppliers to improve software capabilities

  • Work with testing engineers to obtain viable correlation data

  • Lead CAE analysis for the development of vehicle thermal and climate systems, including refrigerant loops, coolant circuits, and the vehicle interior.

  • Lead CAE analysis to develop tools and improve predictive capability

  • Lead CAE analysis to make improvements to current designs based on customer feedback

  • Use component modeling to support CVTMS work by building WCC, chiller, cooler core, heater core, and compressor CAE models as the supplier data arrives.

  • Work with cross functional product development teams for both attribute and component design.

  • Work with teams to develop new technologies related to vehicle thermal systems.

  • Capture lessons learned and support updates to requirements and specifications.

Minimum Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field

  • A strong understanding of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and combustion

  • 2+ years minimum experience in thermal/fluid CAE simulation.

  • Self-directed, confident, and resilient individual with excellent communication skills.

  • Excellent work planning and issue resolution skills

Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • 2+ years experience in vehicle climate control performance testing

  • 2+ years experience in automotive ICE/Powertrain or vehicle CAE applications

  • Proficient in the use of thermal analytical tools like Fluent, StarCD, etc.

  • Familiarity with CAD systems, preferably CATIA

  • Familiarity with CAD tools such as Catia, TeamCenter - Some programming experience (Java, C, scripting)

  • Good communication skills - both verbal and written

  • Strong analytical abilities including data driven problem solving

  • Ability to work in fast paced environment, with flexibility to adjust to changing priorities

  • Experience with Human Comfort Modeling and/or shape optimization processes

  • Background with both experimental and computational fluid mechanics.
