Stetson University Risk Manager AS6471 in DeLand, Florida
The Risk Manager oversees the University’s risk management program, encompassing risk analysis, risk treatment, claims, and insurance functions. The incumbent identifies, assesses, manages, proactively mitigates, and reports on University-wide and department-specific risks to various stakeholders. This position supports the University’s educational mission and goals by addressing loss exposures to ensure a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, guests, and volunteers. Additionally, the Risk Manager protects the University from losses that could impede its mission, financial stability, and growth through loss control, insurance coverage, training, and safety guidelines.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties include, but are not limited to:
Serve as University liaison with insurance partners for all aspects of insurance procurement and implementation to include: insurance plan and policy reviews, completion of annual renewal applications, premium billings and payments, and annual premium audits as applicable
Administer claims handling, claim submissions, correspondence with claims adjusters, claim file monitoring, and file documentation
Manage University loss control efforts with departments, campus partners, and University’s insurance broker via campus loss control visits and implementation of recommendations
Analyze existing and new operations, identify risks, and recommend courses of action ensure proper integration
Evaluate and collaborate on loss control and hazard assessments, including exposure analysis and research related to special events, campus safety, and student activities both on and off campus
Collaborate with University’s insurance broker to operationalize MVR/Driver Screens, Vehicle/Driver safety policies, Vehicle Accident Investigation and Claims handling, which includes both the University insurance carrier claims and claims submissions with external auto carriers of others
Work with campus departments with incident investigation, injury prevention assessments, strategic loss control measures and ergonomic assessments
Inform processes related to updating and implementing University policies
Ensure that University events, organizations, and activities comply with liability waiver policy and process
Facilitate the implementation of individual event-specific liability policies when required, in coordination with third-party vendors
Work collaboratively with the WORLD Office and Stetson Health Service to obtain suitable health insurance for international students
Serve as a member of the Emergency Management Team for the DeLand Campus and the College of Law
Manage the office’s student workers, including training, supervising, and mentoring them to prepare for professional work post-graduation
Manage websites connected to risk management
Support the University’s Mission and Values (https://www.stetson.edu/other/about/mission-and-values.php.) through this position
Performs other site and position specific tasks as assigned
Required Skills
Proficient knowledge of risk management frameworks and strategies
Extensive knowledge of insurance coverage, including liability insurance, property insurance, workers compensation, commercial auto insurance, and various accident policies, as well as contract review, research, and communications
Effective technical skills which enable the implementation and execution of risk management strategies
Previous experience in or quick to learn higher education culture
Highly skilled in researching solutions to complex challenges
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to simplify complex topics/ideas into easily understandable information
Detail and deadline oriented with the ability to think creatively and work on multiple projects simultaneously
Genuine ability to connect, motivate, and influence others
Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey information kindly and effectively to all constituencies
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, etc.)
Required Experience
Two years of experience in risk management, insurance, or a related field
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in an applicable field
Experience with various loss control methods and claims handling
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University’s auto insurance carrier.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Experience identifying, analyzing, and mitigating risk in an education-related field
Experience sourcing insurance carriers for situation-specific matters
Proven leadership experience in risk management within a higher education setting
Certification in Risk Management (e.g., ARM Principles Certification, Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst)
Designation or experience in Safety Management and OSHA requirements for Higher Education
URMIA membership
