Position Summary

Under the direction of the Grounds Foreman, assists in the management of grounds, landscape maintenance operations, and moving and special event support in the Physical Plant Department. Serves as a working supervisor who participates in all types of grounds duties and activities.

Essential Functions

In addition to following the University of Denver's policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plans, organizes, directs, controls, and evaluates the work and staff of the Grounds Services unit of the Physical Plant Department, which includes the functions of planting, cultivation, propagation, and care of turf, shrubs, flowers, and trees; mowing; watering; pruning; special installation projects; parking lot maintenance; trash and litter removal; moving furniture and special event set up support; and snow removal. Ensures that safety policies, productivity and quality standards, and rules, regulations, and other policies are followed.   • Performs actual ground maintenance duties individually or as part of a crew and uses such equipment as a backhoe, dump truck, bucket truck, tractor, snowplow, hand carts, dollies, and hand truck.
  • Inspect all equipment on a regular basis to ensure it is clean, properly lubricated, adequately sharpened, and in safe working condition. Reports problems using established procedures. May perform minor maintenance tasks as required.
  • Maintains accurate records of chemical use, soil preparation, seeding, sod, fertilization, aeration, and pesticide use; completes monthly workload and other reports as requested.
  • Applies fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, etc., and assures the proper and timely completion of such activities. Maintains the health and beauty of trees and shrubs, including wrapping and staking young trees and pruning and removing trees and shrubs.
  • Other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises lower classification, permanent, and temporary (seasonal) personnel as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals. =

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers for the organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as weights, measures, discounts, interest, proportions, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic and intermediate algebra.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to assess quickly a variety of data in emergency situations to develop effective solutions.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and effectively supervise the work of others.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, codes (e.g., OSHA, EPA, building), and regulations in assigned areas.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety regulations, and safety precautions of the trade(s).
  • Knowledge of the construction and operational principles of assigned area systems.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment required for the performance of duties.
  • Ability to maintain various records, prepare reports, and order supplies using computerized and manual systems.
  • Ability to prepare estimates of ime and material required for projects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various professional, non-professional, and skilled trades personnel.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and work a flexible schedule when workload is required.
  • Knowledge of all types of landscaping grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and software applications.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures.
  • Ability to respond to situations requiring immediate attention and to daily priorities that are established and frequently monitored by the Supervisor.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as backhoe, dump truck, bucket truck, tractor, and snowplow.
  • Must be able to read and interpret landscape drawings.
  • Must be able to report to work early in the morning, on weekends, and on holidays for snow removal.
  • Must provide own transportation to and from work. Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. and five years experience in horticulture, landscaping, or grounds maintenance position, with at least 3 years in supervisory capacity required. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted.

  • Valid Colorado driver's license and insurable by the University of Denver's insurance carrier
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver's Licenses class B (CDL).
  • Current State of Colorado chemical applicators license.
