University Of Denver Music Library On-Call Assistant in Denver, Colorado

Department Summary

The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, a remote storage facility called the Hampden Center, and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center, is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. Position Summary

Reporting to the Music Library Supervisor, the Staff On-Call works as a public services staff member at the Music Library, retrieving and circulating materials, and assisting users with directional and informational questions during needed coverage times.

This is a part-time non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

Essential Functions

Service Point On-Call

  • Works on-call at the service desk executing circulation transactions, retrieving and re-shelving reserve items, media, circulating devices, and current periodicals
  • Assists patrons with general inquiries, fine-related inquiries, catalog and database searching, finding items on the shelves, and with using library printing, photocopying, and scanning equipment
  • Works in the general stacks shelving materials, retrieving materials for Prospector, Interlibrary Loan, and paging requests
  • Monitors the service desk and adjacent areas to assure a positive patron experience, fields telephone inquiries, and coaches student employees as needed
  • Opens or closes the library as needed
  • Other duties as assigned, may include: shelf-reading, materials shifting, daily clerical work and special projects. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

  • Must have excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, closely follow established procedures, and to perform work requiring considerable attention to detail.
  • Must have experience using computers in a work environment as well as experience using standard office productivity software.
  • Must be able to learn new computer systems as needed.
  • Must be able to operate and troubleshoot office technology such as photocopiers, printers, and computer workstations.
  • Good judgment, problem solving, and decision-making skills are necessary to ensure accuracy in a detail-oriented environment, and to ensure quality interactions with library staff and users. Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in a library in a public-facing role

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and adjust work schedule as needed Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in any branch of University of Denver Libraries, OR prior experience working in an academic music library on another university campus

  • Familiarity with music materials and research tools Work Schedule

Hours will vary. Likely coverage needs (listed in order of priority) occur on weekday evenings 4:30p-10p, weekends 11a-5p, and weekday afternoons 12p-2p, with the possibility of additional coverage needs occurring at other times during our weekday open hours.

Work Environment

The Music Library is a branch library of University Libraries, located in the Lamont School of Music. The work environment is a busy public service desk in an academic library. The department is highly automated with attention paid to ergonomics and safety using workstations equipped with easy access to needed resources and access to the Internet. The unit is one of several working collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization.

Physical Activities

  • Must be able to lift books and push loaded book trucks and other materials in this department.
  • Must be able to bend down to access low shelves and use footstools to reach high shelves. Application Deadline
