Denver Urban Renewal Authority Senior Accountant in Denver, Colorado

This is an extraordinary opportunity for a mature leader and accounting expert who enjoys working in the government space, working with complex accounting and financial concepts, and translating results to all levels of the organization including finance and non-finance managers. Additionally, this is an opportunity to have an influential role with a small team, and a longstanding, financially strong quasi-governmental organization that fulfills an important and critical need for the citizens of the City and County of Denver. Finally, DURA is nearing the completion of a much-anticipated upgrade to a cloud-based accounting and finance software system. This person will be able to provide input to this important process and help test the software to ensure our satisfaction. The person in this role will partner with the CFO, senior leadership, and information technology staff to enhance and better integrate finance, accounting, HR, and IT functions. Provides guidance and reviews all accounts, general ledger and subledgers, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll to ensure compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and Government Accounting Board statements. Prepares and posts journal entries on a daily, monthly, quarterly and annual basis relating to assigned funds; and reviews and approves transactions, and reconciliations of the general ledger accounts to subsidiary ledgers and external statements and resolves discrepancies. Completes month-end closing checklist and performs actual system closing. Reconciles various general ledger accounts to subsidiary ledgers or external statements, (banks, bonds, accounts receivable, and developer deposits) on a monthly basis. Participates in, cross trains, and provides backup and support to the other Accountant and their duties. This includes month-end and year end processes, reconciliations, business processes, financial system troubleshooting, and projects as assigned. Provides review and guidance of accounting for bond financing and investments of restricted and unrestricted assets of DURA in keeping with internal policies and guidelines and ensuring compliance with fund accounting requirements and continuing disclosure obligations. Prepares and delivers accurate and actionable financial reporting on a timely and regular basis, including analysis and preparation of financial data, budget to actual results, assets and liabilities with a view to identify, explain, and address variances as appropriate. Participates and in some areas lead the preparation and coordination of annual audit activity, including ensuring preparation of fully reconciled and error-free audit workpapers to facilitate a timely and efficient audit process. Assists DURA leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process. Oversees all financial, project/program and grants accounting, ensuring strict compliance with financing agreements, government contracts, continuing disclosure, and applicable laws and regulations. Works closely with housing manager to ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with program budgets throughout the contract period as well as prepares financial reporting materials and related support of program reviews and audits. Maintains internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, program budgets and actual expenditures. Supports CFO in the monitoring of progress and changes in financial position of DURA, including cashflow and cash position to keep senior leadership abreast of DURA's financial status. Supports the CFO in engaging the Audit and Finance committee around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery. Qualifications and Skills 3-5 years of progressively responsible technical accounting experience at the level of Senior Accountant or above (preferably in the public sector) Solid understanding and experience in Fund Accounting Thorough knowledge of GAAP and Government Accounting S andard Board statements relevant to governments/nonprofits, serving as subject matter expert on GASB standards and statements External and internal audit preparation experience Experience with software/ERP conversions and implementations (DURA is currently converting from Sage 50 to Sage Intacct) Numbers expert, including spreadsheet and data management Detail-oriented Organized and strong time manager Contract compliance Knowledge and understanding of property and sales tax principles and processes Strong interpersonal and communication skills Mindful of deadlines with ability to effectively multi-task Results-oriented with the capability to deliver high-quality and accurate work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment Education and Experience Requirements BS or BA in Accounting CPA preferred 5-7 years of relevant accounting experience, public and governmental accounting is preferred 3-7 years of experience as an auditor or substantial experience preparing for an annual audit Experience with AP/AR and Payroll Experience with industry standard accounting software, and/or ERPs.
