JOB SUMMARY:

The VP, Underwriter will perform analysis, due diligence and underwriting of Small Business Administration (SBA) loan requests. Review initial borrower submissions, perform analysis of information submitted and prepare a written credit presentation of construction, real estate, and commercial loan requests. The primary purpose of this position is to independently evaluate the credit worthiness of loan requests covering new credit relationships. Underwriter will perform financial analysis and cash flow calculations to determine the viability of each credit request based on Banc of California’s lending criteria, and will be responsible for the timely, effective and efficient completion of required underwriting tasks to complete the loan report. The underwriter interacts and effectively communicates with Bank personnel and with existing or prospective clients.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate loan application packages for completeness and eligibility under Small Business Lending Loan Program guidelines.

  • Develop thorough understanding of the nature and history of the applicant’s business, the market in which the business operates, and assess the capability of its management.

  • Complete spreadsheet of financial statements and/or tax returns.

  • Analysis of tax returns and financial statements, including balance sheet, P&L and cash flow calculations.

  • Effectively function as a member of the deal team to assess the credit worthiness of prospective borrowers.

  • Recommend the approval, decline and/or restructuring of specific loan request.

  • Identify the credit risk and suggest mitigants.

  • Prepare and complete the Loan Report for submission and approval of Small Business Administration Loan Program request by Credit Management.

  • Participate in credit committee meetings as appropriate.

  • Assist in the preparation and completion of Commitment Letters (as needed) to ensure that the approval conditions imposed by Credit Management are spelled out clearly to all parties.

  • Review documents related to loan request, including but not limited to, appraisal report, purchase agreements, credit reports, etc.

  • Ensure compliance with all Bank’s policies and SBA SOP’s.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrates knowledge of, adherence to, monitoring and responsibility for compliance with state and federal regulations and laws as they pertain to this position including but not limited to the following: Regulation Z (Truth in Lending Act), Regulation B (Equal Credit Opportunity Act), Fair Housing Act (FHA), Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA), Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) in conjunction with the USA PATRIOT Act, Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Customer Information Program (CIP), Right to Financial Privacy Act (RFPA, state and federal) and Community Reinvestment Act (CRA)

  • Experience with structure and rules associated with government guaranteed loan products (7(a), 504, and USDA)

  • PC proficient with emphasis in Word and Excel

  • Excellent composing and writing skills

  • Ability to communicate verbally with a wide range of applicants, clients and bank colleagues

  • Responsiveness, judgment, maturity, integrity, and time management skills

  • Must be a self-starter and able to multi-task, work efficiently on own and team environment, and be readily adaptable to change

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet completion deadlines

  • Strong financial analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex financial statements and complicated business and personal tax returns

  • 1-3 years of SBA experience with an SBA lending institution

  • Experience with financial analysis and a thorough knowledge of SBA guidelines and regulations

  • Experience with the structure and rules associated with government guaranteed loan products (7a, 504, and USDA)

  • Experience in underwriting various Commercial Real Estate properties preferred

  • Minimum of 6-8 years of underwriting experience in real estate, construction and commercial financing including valuation and asset management and financial analysis

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Finance and/or related work experience

SALARY RANGE: $84,344.00 - $146,191.76USD; Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
