About the Staff Development Department

The Staff Development Department provides competence-based staff education utilizing a variety of teaching strategies suitable to the individuals level of expertise, needs and desired outcomes, to ensure patient and staff safety, increase staff competence and to provide quality patient care. The department is responsible for streamlining all training including new employee orientation, the annual competency training for all hospital staff, training for new programs, interventions and intitatives. Implementing training that is an interactive and dynamic process designed to deliver essential information in a variety of formats to increase staff competency to meet performance standards. The department also provides audio-visual support hospital wide for trainings and in-services and maintains and distributes training records to managers to assist in tracking completion of competency components and compliance with hospital standards.

Description of Job

About the Positions:

This position is responsible for providing instruction to staff utilizing adult learning principles for New Employee Orientation (NEO), Annual Training, Webinars, and other training programs for all hospital employees. This position develops learning materials, or edits and further develops content provided by Subject Matter Experts (SME) and creates learning objectives that are measurable, achievable, and compliant with competency requirements. In addittion to actively contributing and supporing the Electronic Health Record curriculum development and functions as a Super User and resource to staff. Duties in this postion include:

Management of Educational Database:

  • Inputs and maintains hospital employee training records consistent with regulatory requirements, including, but not limited to, the requirements from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid, the Office of Civil and Forensic Mental Health, 27-65 Regulations, and the Department of Public Health and Environment

  • establishes scheduling and a tracking system to ensure that all new employees and current employees receive the required training in a timely fashion

  • supports, updates, and maintains the entire hospital employee training records for supervisors, individuals, and regulatory agencies

  • assists in creating reports for various departments or assisting supervisors with pulling and generating their team reports

  • creates and maintains training login credentials

Instructor/Training Programs:

  • Conducts implements, and evaluates training programs utilizing adult learning principles for New Employee Orientation, Annual Training, and other training programs for all hospital employees

  • Assists new employees in completing their orientation, advises and counsels them to resolve scheduling issues, and completes training within acceptable guidelines. Researches, reviews, and updates classes with new information regarding the content of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as a certified instructor

  • Assists with developing learning objectives for current and new classes

  • Serves as backup for organizing the training schedules and scheduling trainers from all disciplines within the hospital, and outside trainers as indicated

  • Maintains certification in BLS and CPI to have the appropriate credentials to teach these programs effectively

  • Maintains skills/competency and remains educated in changes implemented in all training programs

  • Maintains, and updates training material for all classes and updates as needed

  • Creates the monthly Staff Development calendar and provides it for use in the Fort in Short Newsletter

Media and Audio Visual Services:

  • Ensures service availability: Controls inventory, selects and purchases appropriate educational technology, and maintains equipment in good working order

  • Sets and maintains standards: chooses proper medium and utilizes its potential, conceptualizes, plans, and produces audiovisual materials incorporating educational media principles, (digital formats, still photography, displays, laminated material, illustrative handout materials) using current production techniques to create aesthetically acceptable products

  • Produces print materials: edits or re-formats existing materials, brochures, announcements, and posters, utilizing various desktop publishing software programs

  • Acts as the hospital photographer/videographer for new employee photos, employee of the month, and hospital-wide events

  • Provides media and audiovisual services and support when requested

  • Follows Policy and Procedure: protects patents and copyrights, follows safety and operating procedures and gives appropriate warnings to users, follows guidelines, and utilizes Policy and Procedure when uncertain

  • Maintains laminating equipment

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • May take on other responsibilities based on skills, knowledge, and abilities

  • May be asked to coordinate projects or activities to enhance staff learning and improve patient care

  • Serves on hospital committees and workgroups, when indicated

Six (6) yearsof relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to

this position

OR

A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation

related to the work assigned to this position equal tosix (6) years

Special Qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain BLS and CPI trainer certificates

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent Computer skills; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google

  • Skilled in public speaking and presenting information to large groups, demonstrated ability to facilitate groups/training

  • Experience with E-Learning platforms (LMS), such as Cornerstone, Moodle, Blackboard

  • Experience in a behavioral healthcare setting

  • B achelors degree in applicable field

    Conditions of Employment:

  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicant’s prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
