Overview of Department

Grand View University-s Accessibility Services office is committed to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for students with disabilities. Accessibility Services works to ensure that qualified students experience an equal opportunity to participate in all aspects of the educational environment through reasonable accommodations and services. The Accessibility Services Office supports students, staff, and faculty with accommodation requests, implementation, guidance, and general information.

Overview of Position

The Accessibility Services Graduate Assistant will play a key role in supporting Accessibility Services with varied strategic initiatives. After completing training, the Accessibility Services Graduate Assistant will conduct individual meetings with students, assist in the development of an online Accessibility Training, facilitate in-class presentations and workshops, proctor tests and/or quizzes, arrange testing for students, and compose Accessibility Plans and other written materials. The Accessibility Services Graduate Assistant will report to the Director of Accessibility Services and will be a critical member of the Accessibility Services Office. The Graduate Assistant must enroll in a Grand View University graduate program, as a full-time student, to work as the Accessibility Services Graduate Assistant. This is an on-campus position.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead one-on-one accessibility information meetings and intake meetings with students.

  • Assist Accessibility Services in the development of an online Accessibility Training program for the larger campus community.

  • Assist Accessibility Services with events and initiatives.

  • Facilitate in-class presentations and/or workshops regarding the Accessibility Services Office offerings and accessibility practices.

  • Create and disseminate information, related to Accessibility Services, to students and the larger campus community.

  • Collaborate with Course Instructors and students to prepare, organize, and arrange testing opportunities for students.

  • Serve as the Primary/Secondary Proctor for testing during the semester/Academic Year.

  • Compose Accessibility Plans, reports, letter writing, and/or other written tasks.

  • Collect, enter, and manage data. File paperwork, scan items, print items, and/or perform other office tasks.

  • Other duties, as assigned.

    Required Skills & Competencies

  • Bachelor-s degree required. - The Graduate Assistant must be enrolled in a Grand View University graduate program, as a full-time student, during the duration of this position.

  • Available to complete a minimum of 20 hours per week.

  • Must attend and complete all Graduate Assistant (GA) & Proctor training sessions.

  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling confidential information.

  • Must be highly organized, pay close attention to detail, and work independently.

  • Must practice open communication, engage in active listening, and tactfully provide constructive feedback to others.

  • Must demonstrate impeccable integrity and have excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Must be reliable and actively practice time management.

    Physical Requirements

  • The ability to verbally communicate information and ideas so others will understand the information being discussed. - Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 90% of the time.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator or specialized drawing/writing tools.

  • The ability to visually observe details at a close (a few feet away) range and on a computer screen.

    Compensation & Hours

  • A stipend amount of $2,000 per semester.

  • If taking classes in Fall/Spring, the stipend will be split over those two semesters, for a total of $2,000 x semester.

  • If taking classes year-round, the stipend can be split over the 12 months of the fiscal year.

  • A 100% tuition waiver for graduate classes.

  • Can work up to 20 hours per week (paid on the 28th of each month).

    Information related to Taxes

  • Graduate Assistant payments are categorized as fringe benefit. Therefore, if a Graduate Assistant receives over $5250 in tuition waivers in a calendar year the additional funds become taxable, and taxes will need to paid for the additional amount.
