Job Description

This is a non-merit position with t he Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System (IPERS).

The Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System (IPERS) is seeking qualified candidates for an Attorney 3 position. The successful candidate will provide legal advice to pension system staff, IPERS members, beneficiaries and attorneys regarding state and federal laws and rules governing administration of the pension system.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide guidance to ensure correct and uniform implementation of pension benefits and disability benefits.

  • Prepare and review requests for proposals, contracts, memoranda, briefs, administrative rules, business rules, correspondence, and other materials.

  • Review and draft legislation and administrative rules.

  • Review, advise, and draft agency decisions in employer and member appeals.

  • Represent IPERS in administrative and state court proceedings.

  • Review, research and make recommendations regarding active participation in securities litigation.

  • Review court orders, qualified domestic relations orders, child support orders, tax levies, and respond to subpoenas and FOIA requests.

  • Ensure all forms and publications are compliant with laws and rules.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited law school and the equivalent of five years of full-time successful and responsible experience in the practice of law;

OR

the equivalent of three years of full-time experience in the practice of law in the employing agency shall be considered as qualifying experience.
