Essential functions (job duties):
The Building Monitor will maintain and safeguard campus building entrances by providing security protection to detect and prevent crimes, locate hazards, suspicious situations, and incidents. This position reports to the Administrative Director.
Provide building security access to assigned medical buildings at Wayne State University (WSU). Responsible for patrolling monitor premises regularly to prevent any unauthorized and/or illegal activities. Maintain the cleanliness of assigned area.
Provide customer service to building guests, staff, and patients by conducting safety and security procedures, site-specific policies and when appropriate, emergency response activities.
Respond to incidents and critical situations in a calm, problem solving manner.
Investigate and report any suspicious activities or incidents.
Maintain liaison with police, fire, and other emergency agencies to assure the safety of students, staff, patients, and visitors.
Conduct initial investigations into security infractions and crimes committed against property or employees and prepare concise and detailed reports.
Report unusual conditions or malfunctioning of heating, plumbing or electrical systems.
Notify building administration, police, and/or appropriate emergency personnel of any emergency, potentially dangerous, or unusual situations.
Report any safety concerns, security breaches, and unusual circumstances both verbally, along with written reports.
Assist in greeting and directing building visitors and/or patients and secure proper identification.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education High school completion (or GED)
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and 2 years of verifiable experience.
Experience Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)
Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field is preferred.
Knowledge of security systems, surveillance techniques, and loss prevention strategies.
Familiarity with conflict management techniques and the ability to handle difficult situations calmly and professionally.
CPR and First Aid Certification is a plus but not required.
Military or law enforcement background is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of basic security operations and applications.
Ability to act and re-act quickly, calmly and in a proper manner in emergency situations.
Ability to keep information confidential.
Ability to communicate effectively with general public.
Ability to conduct visual and audio surveillance.
Attention to detail.
Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
Ability to use good judgment in accordance with policies and procedures.
