DRAPER CITY PLANS EXAMINER in DRAPER, Utah

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Chief Building Official, performs complex technical reviews of residential, commercial, or other construction plans to ensure compliance with municipal building codes, approval of construction plans, and interprets blueprints to ensure public safety and health.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

• None.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Examines plans and specifications of residential, commercial, industrial, public and other developments to ensure compliance with adopted construction codes.

• Reviews building plans with inspectors.

• Assists building inspectors with difficult or unusual code requirements.

• Prepares and maintains records of plan checking activities.

• Conducts or attends pre-construction meetings.

• Answers the questions of other city departments regarding any adopted construction codes.

• Reviews contractor and homeowner problems and provide solutions.

• Inspects buildings under construction for compliance with adopted construction codes.

• Interprets adopted construction codes as applicable with guidelines.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education -- High school diploma or G.E.D. Associate degree or two years of higher education. (Preference given to education in architecture, construction technology, trades,              drafting, construction management, or a related field.)

• Experience -- Three years of experience. (Five years of work experience may be substituted for the required two years of college education.)

• Licenses/Certifications --

      o Combination inspector certification required. Plans examiners certification preferred.

      o OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and certifications as defined by the Chief Building Official.

      o Valid Utah Driver License.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of --

      o General construction practices

      o Principles of construction and basic planning principles

      o Adopted construction codes as amended by the State of Utah and Draper City

• Skill with --

      o MS Office, word processing, spread sheets, presentation preparation, desktop publishing, and various HRIS software programs

      o Bluebeam Revu software or other similar reviewing software preferred

• Ability to --

      o Read and interpret blueprints and plans.

      o Review and approve the utilization of structural materials, including verification of proper concrete reinforcing, use of proper construction joints and beams, and compliance of             wall, floor, and roof design.

      o Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

      o Prepare clear and concise reports.

      o Work effectively in a sometimes-stressful environment.

      o Communicate and coordinate effectively with other city staff and representatives of other organizations to accomplish shared and multi-disciplinary tasks.

      o Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, public officials, and the public.

      o Meet expected deadlines and attain measurable results as defined by the Building Official.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Typical office setting with comfortable climate controls. Position may require working outdoors. Tasks require a variet y of physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Occasionally lifts or otherwise moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds. This position has exposure to stressful situations. Work is often performed under deadlines and time constraints. May drive a motor vehicle.
