Sr. Payroll Manager

The opportunity:

You will directly lead a team of 4 Payroll Supervisors, with an additional 25 indirect team members comprised of Payroll Specialists, Analyst, and Processors in your care. In addition, the Sr. Payroll Manager has full ownership of managing all activities of the Payroll Department to ensure accurate full cycle payroll (meaning we do everything in house, we do not have a 3rd party provider) for over 30,000 U.S employees. The Payroll Manager will be accountable for all aspects of each pay cycle including, but not limited to, time reporting, pay calculation, pay confirmation, reporting, and system.

How you will impact WestRock:

\u2022 Ownership and accountability for U.S. payroll end-to-end operations, including payroll processes and procedures, SOX controls, and consistent and accurate payroll execution

\u2022 Collaboratively develop and implement department policies, procedures, and process improvements.

\u2022 Ensure that all operational processes are controlled from a risk perspective, and have built-in control plans and assessments to regularly review their effectiveness

\u2022 Evaluate, develop and enforce the use of audit tools which support the payroll process

\u2022 Develop and conduct payroll related training for employees and effectively communicate changes regarding the payroll system

\u2022 Drive the creation and implementation of Time and Attendance related processes and standard work across teams and locations

\u2022 Support an inclusive environment of collaboration, respect, and development

\u2022 Develop and prioritize processes to improve the payroll experience for employees; drive projects to create efficiencies, improve quality of service delivery, and increase customer satisfaction

\u2022 Ensure the confidentiality and retention of payroll information and records in accordance with established policies

\u2022 Responsible for continuous process improvement identified through root-cause analyses

\u2022 Serve as a subject matter expert and point of contact for escalations and various ad hoc requests

\u2022 Provide guidance on the interpretations of policies and procedures and the use of the payroll system, employee self-service, and online form

\u2022 Ensure compliance, regulatory reporting and remittance, adherence to all requirements

What you need to succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • CPP certification is strongly desired, along w/ high volume, multi-state payroll processing experience.

  • 10+ years of hands-on payroll leadership experience in complex environments.

  • In-depth functional experience with Peoplesoft 9.2 experience a plus.

  • Previous experience working with Time & attendance files and systems

  • Thorough understanding of pay calculations, payroll processes, pay standards and wage and hour laws.

  • Strong leadership and excellent team management skills

  • Deep understanding of payroll tax & garnishment rules

  • Experience working with database reporting systems, word processing and spreadsheet software experience (i.e., Access, Word, Excel) including writing documentation that describes operating procedures and the ability to write complex formulas and calculations; experience using pivot tables and VLOOKUP's.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and develop actionable recommendations.

  • Experience with system implementations, upgrades, application configuration, systems analysis, requirements definition, user testing, and production support

  • Strong project and time management skills; knowledge of project management methodology

  • Experience designing, documenting & training on HRIS and Payroll related policies and procedures designed to obtain, record, and process employee information.

  • Union experience would be very helpful
