Courtroom Security Officer

Duties: The municipal court security officer's primary responsibility is to provide a uniformed presence during court proceedings and intervene in incidents where someone is being disruptive or violating courtroom safety protocols. This is accomplished by greeting all persons coming through the public entrance of the courthouse and remaining visible during courtroom proceedings. It is the security officer's responsibility to inspect and operate all issued equipment to include potential screening equipment. Issued equipment may include a uniform, radio and hand-held wand or other equipment made available at a later time. The security officer may be required to deny entrance to the courtroom, or ask anyone already in the courtroom, to leave if they are being disruptive or failing to comply with courtroom rules or safety protocols. The security officer is required to respond to emergency calls for security assistance within the courtroom and call for assistance from on-duty officers with the Durango Police Department or other available law enforcement officials when needed.

Stand at the courtroom entrance for extended periods, visually observing and assessing all individuals entering the public area. Ensure issued equipment, such as uniforms and electronics, is in good working condition and appearance. Conduct routine security checks of the courtroom and surrounding areas before and after court sessions. Great visitors, assess their compliance with courtroom safety rules, and deny entrance if necessary. Request assistance from on-duty police if individuals become disruptive. Provide court schedule and proceeding information to the public as needed. Notify on-duty police personnel of prisoner transport needs. Escort defendants to the Clerk's Office for fine payments when required. Perform additional tasks as assigned by the judge or court personnel, which may include office work or monitoring specific areas or individuals. Operate electronic equipment, with the possibility of new devices being introduced.

Requirements: Be at least 21 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

Other Requirements: Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including de-escalating tense situations. Be adaptable and capable of learning new procedures and technologies. Maintain a professional demeanor and work effectively with diverse individuals and groups. Foster positive interactions between the community and the Municipal Court. Ability to pass a background check and be issued a CJIS OSN.

Wage: $22.52 - $33.78 Hourly

Shifts: This is a part-time position. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while Court is in session at this time.
