Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Government Legal Director in Durant, Oklahoma

Job Purpose or Objective(s): Direct and advise on legal issues, strategy, and policy for the protection of the Choctaw Nation’s sovereignty. You will report to the Executive Director of Legal Operations.

Primary Tasks:

  1. You will monitor, advise, and take necessary legal action to protect sovereignty and look for opportunities to exercise and expand sovereignty for the Choctaw Nation, and work on unusual or complex issues to provide solutions that may be highly creative.

  2. You will manage a team of staff attorneys and assist in rendering legal advice and services to various departments of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and assisting them in protection of the Nation’s sovereignty.

  3. You will provide professional development, mentorship, and evaluation of staff attorneys.

  4. You will allocate government legal resources to fulfill the legal needs and requests of governmental departments within the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

  5. You will prepare periodic reports on pending, resolved, and potential governmental legal issues.

  6. You will conduct research and providing legal advice to the assigned departments of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

  7. You will provide case and project management, negotiation of contractual agreements, mitigation of legal liability, and work with outside entities on behalf of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

  8. You will manage the preparation, negotiation, review and advisory work pertaining to governmental contracts, agreements, and other legal instruments on behalf of the Nation.

  9. You will coordinate the preparation off all Council Bills, changes to the Choctaw Nation Code, and communication of these changes to the public.

  10. Perform other tasks as may be assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school

  • Ten (10) years’ experience as a practicing attorney with at least three (3) years’ experience directly supervising staff attorneys

  • Licensed to practice law by a State within the United States

  • Ability to handle a variety of legal fields, practices and procedures

  • Application of professional knowledge and ability by possessing strong judgment and evaluation skills

  • Grasp of the legal issues and exhibit skills necessary to assign duties, manage Staff Attorneys, assist other department leaders as requested to ensure legal needs for the government departments are met.

  • Understanding of tribal law, sovereignty, and tribal court proceedings
