VA PHASER (Pharmacogenomics Testing for Veterans)

The Institute for Medical Research, a nonprofit organization that conducts education and research for the Durham VA Health Care System (DVAHCS), is seeking to hire a Data Technician III. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, self-directed individual with a strong attention to detail and a team spirit.

The Data Technician is accountable for processing large amounts of clinical data as well as follow-up on audit findings as indicated. The work requires a significant degree of flexibility, critical thinking to complete complex tasks, and effective communication with multiple stakeholders. This position is also an opportunity to work with a highly productive and dynamic team in the provision of clinical patient care across VA sites nationwide.

The successful candidate will operate under the supervision of a PHASER National Deployment and Operations Manager and in liaison with VA staff at PHASER-deployed sites in support of the day-to-day operational activities of VA PHASER: Pharmacogenomic (PGx) Testing for Veterans. PHASER is a multi-year initiative that aims to educate providers, staff, patients about PGx and to provide PGx testing for up to 250,000 patients across the national VA health care system. The overall goal of PHASER is to improve the efficacy and to reduce the toxicity of commonly prescribed medications through the use of pharmacogenetic testing by incorporating results into the electronic health record and utilizing clinical decision support to guide interpretation and use of test results. This position is 100% remote but requires in-person availability based on business needs.

This is a time-limited position contingent upon funding and the anticipated appointment is for a 1 year term. Additional time in the position may be extended based on future opportunities and funding.

Location: Candidates must reside within commuting distance of Durham, NC, or be willing to relocate before their start date.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Data Entry & Workflow Coordination

  • Process PGx testing results received utilizing an automated distribution program

  • Initiate and monitor the local workflow for results processing & coordinate communication with the local site to ensure appropriate, timely processing of PGx patient results

  • Enter PGx testing results in patient medical record per current workflow

  • Alert appropriate individuals of PGx test result availability

  • Print & mail patient results letters, including PGx educational materials, from the PHASER hub in Durham

  • Quality & Compliance

  • Perform scheduled audits of patient PGx results data entry

  • Perform scheduled audits of PGx orders

  • Monitor current PGx test orders for results release and processing

  • Follow-up as indicated on audit findings including responding with corrective action when necessary

  • Maintain patient confidentiality

  • Complete tasks independently and manage personal workflow

  • Communicate effectively with team members in both written and oral communications

  • Troubleshoot and modify workflow when necessary.

  • Recommend new methods for data processing & documentation

  • Assist Deployment & Operations Manager when needed

  • Act as a back-up for site coordinator results processing & data entry as needed

    Required Skills and Experience:

    Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. They must be reliable, self-motivated, detail-oriented and extremely organized. Data technicians are required to manage the workflow of this large-scale project accurately within a fast-paced environment. English proficiency and basic computer skills are required. Employees must reside in North Carolina and be able to work in an office setting.

    Physical Requirements: The physical requirements and activities that are required to perform the essential functions of the position include, but may not be limited to, as follows: Must be able to occasionally lift, pull and push a minimum of 40 pounds , stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, squat, kneel, and stoop, regularly use fingers, hands for computer work.

    Supervisory Controls: T he position of Data Technician is under the direct supervisor of the PHASER Deployment & Operations Lead.

    Rate of Pay : $23.11 per hour

    Salary will be commensurate with abilities and experience.

    Start Date: Expected start date is 4-6 weeks after offer, but is somewhat flexible and contingent upon completion and processing of VA paperwork.
