Michigan State University(MSU) Scientist FRIB/NSCL-Continuing in East Lansing, Michigan
Working/Functional Title
High Power Targetry Physicist
Position Summary
The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams is searching for an energetic, self-driven scientist who loves solving complex physics and engineering problems.
FRIB is the world's first operating accelerator facility in which a liquid lithium charge stripper is used. Do you aspire to assist with leading the operations, maintenance, and improvements of the liquid lithium and carbon foil charge strippers? The High Power Targetry Physicist
will also support the production target and beam dump establishment. These beam-intercepting devices are the key to ramping up the beam power.
As a High Power Targetry Physicist, you will...
Charge Strippers (55%)
- Support FRIB operations by maintaining liquid lithium and carbon charge strippers to ensure an operational state.
- Provide technical support on the charge strippers during FRIB operations
- Assist with making recommended improvements to the charge strippers. Improvements are, but are not limited to, producing a thicker and uniform liquid lithium film; to minimize lithium splashing in the vacuum chamber. The scope of improvements includes the subsystems of the strippers (e.g. vacuum and/or argon subsystems of the liquid lithium charge stripper)
- Conduct scientific research to understand the physics behind charge exchange between beams and charge stripping media
Target and Beam Dump (40%)
- Support the production target and beam dump establishment through discussions, simulations, analyses, and testing
- Conduct radiation hazard assessments on activated water in the non-conventional utilities system to support dispersive radioactivity hazard prevention and mitigation
- Conduct water radiolysis analysis in collaboration with water radiolysis experts in FRIB to support hydrogen hazard prevention and mitigation
