Michigan State University Specialist - Outreach-Fixed Term in East Lansing, Michigan

Position Summary

As the Community Engaged Specialist for Greater Lansing, you will be at the forefront of MSU’s proactive strategy in the Lansing region. Your responsibility is to work with MSU’s University Outreach and Engagement office and the Center for Community and Economic Development to create and implement this strategy, focusing on neighborhood and community development. You will engage nonprofit organizations, community and neighborhood organizations, government agencies, preK-12 school districts (including intermediate school districts), and private for-profit organizations. You facilitate community-university partnerships connecting all MSU units and disciplines for engaged research, education, and service. The Specialist position is all about facilitating community-university partnerships that build and enact community-engaged scholarship, learning and partnerships.

The CES will be a liaison and connector among local communities (Ingham-Eaton-Clinton region) and MSU faculty, staff, and students. The CES builds connections with community groups to enable respectful, mutually beneficial projects and initiatives with MSU personnel that create new knowledge, further community goals and learning objectives, and provide pathways to services and educational and career advancement

Required Degree

Masters -relevant degree in an area working with communities and/or school engagement.

Desired Degree

Doctorate -relevant degree in an area working with communities and/or school engagement.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in relevant disciplines involving community or school engagement.

  • Five years of experience working in a community, educational or government organization.

  • Excellent knowledge of best practices in community and partnership development.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with campus and external partners.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    Desired Qualifications

  • Doctorate in relevant field of scholarship

  • Experience as a community, government, philanthropic or for-profit agency director.

  • Experience teaching or conducting research in higher education.

  • Experience leading professional development and adult education sessions.

  • Knowledge of the precepts and practices of community-engaged scholarship.

  • Excellent knowledge of the bureaucratic workings of university settings/systems.

  • Experience developing, monitoring, and reporting on metrics and objectives
