Position Summary

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Michigan State University invites applications for a fullā€time, 12-month, fixed-term Academic Specialist-Teacher with a 95% teaching assignment and 5% service, with annual reappointment available contingent on satisfactory evaluated performance. The start date of the position is flexible; however, ideally the preference is for the person to commence work no later than 8/1/2024.

Teaching (95%): Teach courses in the Didactic Program in Dietetics and if needed also the MS Dietetic Internship (MSDI), be actively engaged in curriculum development and maintenance based on the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics requirements. Courses may include Introductory Nutrition (HNF 150), Applied Community Nutrition (HNF 377); Applied Nutrition Assessment Laboratory (HNF 378), Research Methods in Dietetics (HNF 411), Global Foods and Culture (HNF 406) and Medical Nutrition Therapy II (HNF 472). Emphasis of teaching includes nutrient function and metabolism; nutrition assessment and medical nutrition therapy; socioeconomic, environmental, and cultural influences on food and health; and research methods in dietetics. Serve as a committee member for MSDI students and other appropriate masters projects.

Service (5%): Actively participate in the Dietetics Curriculum Committee and other service to the department, college, or university. This may include, but is not limited to, active participation in committee responsibilities as assigned, writing letters of recommendation for students applying to scholarships, graduate programs, dietetic internships, and professional programs. Represent the dietetics program by serving in professional organizations and attending professional conferences as needed and funds allow.

Masters -Dietetics, Nutrition or related field

Minimum Requirements

  • An earned MS, RDN completed and credentialed prior to start date

  • Minimum of three years of professional experience post-credentialing within academic or clinical settings, and demonstrated ability to progressively handle more responsibility

  • Demonstrated progressive increase in responsibility and professional advancement in the field of dietetics

  • Evidence of prior experience educating in a professional setting

  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in teaching and practice

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior teaching and course development at the college-level preferred

  • Experience with online course management and delivery

  • Previous teaching experience in an ACEND accredited program.
