Position Summary
Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.
As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry.
User facility operation is supported by theDOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics (https://www.energy.gov/science/np/nuclear-physics) . MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according toU.S. News & World Report.

Major Positions/Duties
Provide strategic advice and planning for mechanical utility systems
Review designs and monitor the installation of mechanical utility systems
Review documentation and work plans for code compliance and safety
Establish mechanical design standards to be used by technical divisions
Oversee and continuously improve the Mechanical Safety Program
Coordinate and conduct design reviews and pressure safety reviews
Drive the usage of and assist with FMEAs
Provide oversight of the fire alarm system
Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of mechanical utility systems and mechanical code authority.
General knowledge of mechanical safety programs and ability to coordinate and review programs.
Knowledge of and strict adherence to safety programs, OSHA, and all related rules, regulations, and procedures which apply to this position’s responsibilities.
Ability to troubleshoot problems with processes.
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population verbally and in writing.
Ability to problem-solve and demonstrate sound critical thinking skills.
Ability to collaborate with others and work effectively in a team environment.
Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.

Required Degree
Masters -Mechanical Engineering
Minimum Requirements
Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
Five years of industry experience
Demonstrated experience in leading projects
Record of accomplishments in field of expertise
Desired Qualifications
Ten years of experience in analysis, design, or installation of mechanical utility systems
Familiarity with particle accelerators and supporting systems such as vacuum, low-conductivity water, and cryogenics
Working knowledge of mechanical codes and standards, including ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and piping codes
Able to obtain a Professional Engineer license in Michigan within 5 years
