Position Description:

Employees in this position are responsible for augmenting a supervising physician's data gathering abilities to reach decisions and institute patient care plans. Provides health care services to patients under direction and responsibility of a Physician.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Responds to initial consult request from University Medical Center’s (UMC) emergency room, patient care floors, and intensive care units.

  • Provides initial "orthopaedic focused" assessment of patient and communicates directly with attending and resident physicians as to finding and recommended treatment plan(s) of action.

  • Conduct hospital rounds, write orders.

  • Formulate and implement a treatment or therapeutic plan.

  • Works in collaboration with U.M.C.

  • Works in cooperation with orthopaedic attending and resident physician teams.

  • Documents all normal and any abnormal data for review by physicians.

  • Performs procedures such as but not limited to, digital blocks, regional anesthesia, and minimum outpatient surgical procedures such as but not limited to: tendon repair, wound closure, wound management, wound debridement, incision, and drainage, needle biopsy, percutaneous pinning fractures, k-wire removal, and hardware removal.

  • Orders and schedules laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures.

  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

  • Completes required billing-related documentation for his/her service according to M.P.I.P. regulations, and state laws, while providing the necessary documentation to substantiate all submitted claims.

  • Documents all prescriptions per policy.

  • This clinician will routinely order, prescribe, dispense and administer medication, orthosis, orthotics, braces, and other orthopaedic devices as may be allowed by state legislation.

  • Provides coordination of post-discharge medical care.

  • Ensures continued compliance with clinical and operational standards.

  • Current RN license in the State of Texas.

  • Four to five years experience as registered nurse with relevant past with experience in an operating room, surgical or orthopaedic specific patient care environment

  • Current certification in cardiac life support, (auditing of) advanced trauma life support courses.

  • Current experience and certification as an adult Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner.

  • Previous "hand on" experience in application of casting materials and splinting devices.

  • Utilizes evidence based medicine to achieve national clinical bench marks as compared to similar size academic teaching institutions.

  • Ensures continued compliance with clinical and operational standards as prescribed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma Level I Trauma Center verification standards.

  • In prescribed circumstances this clinical provider-clinician will respond to U.M.C. hospital Trauma Team activations for both the Level I and or Level II alert criteria.

  • Works in cooperation and coordination with orthopaedic surgeons, consulting services- teams, and hospital-based staff in providing family-centered care by communicating with family regarding the changing health care needs of spouses, adult children or family members.

  • Assesses family adaptation, coping skills, and the potential need for crisis or other intervention modes.

  • Complies with all HIPAA requirements as well as hospital and university health sciences center policies and procedures.

  • Current BLS Certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.

  • Personally demonstrate, display, and act in accordance with TTUHSCEP’s values (Service, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Advancement, and Teamwork). Actively promote and encourage staff across the institution.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

  • Adhere to all TTUHSCEP policies, procedures and processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two to four years of experience as an Adult Nurse Practitioner working in a busy multi-specialty orthopaedic group practice.

  • Five to eight years of experience as a Registered Nurse with relevant experience in a peri-operative/operating room environment, surgical or orthopaedic patient care units.

  • Certification, knowledge, and hands-on experience as an orthopaedic cast & splinting technician.

  • Current certification and two years of "hands-on" experience as a "first assistant" in a busy hospital-based operating room environment.

  • Two years of experience as an Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner assigned to the "Trauma Response Team" in an A.C.S. verified Level I Trauma Center.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant's training program approved by the Council on Allied Health Education Accreditation of the American Medical Association.

  • Current Physician Assistant license in the State of Texas or ability to transfer license to Texas.

  • Certification as a Physician Assistant as evidenced by passing the examinations given by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants.

  • OR Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a nurse practitioner from an approved certification program recognized by Texas Board of Nursing.

  • Current R.N. license as approved by the Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer license to Texas.

  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner from an approved certification program as recognized by Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer certification to Texas.
