Position Description:
Directly manages and supervises Health Information Management (HIM) coding operations and staff and serves as a subject matter expert for staff, along with other internal and external stakeholders.

Major/Essential Functions:
Monitors the daily work activities of the division to ensure key performance metrics, indicator, and goals are met effectively and timely
Ensures the daily staffing schedule is appropriate as well as the distribution of staff assignments and workload. Plans staffing needs and assigns work to meet target completion dates. Takes appropriate actions when necessary to meet established standards
Establishes and implements operational infrastructure to meet current and future needs in response to operational, regulatory, and technology changes
Develops, coordinates and oversees implementation of policies and procedures that support revenue cycle and HIM coding functions, and organizational goals. Identifies, coordinates, and implements projects and/or programs to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of HIM coding operations. Ensures projects are completed on schedule following established procedures and timelines
Reports and addresses issues and changes timely and accurately
Establishes and maintains relationships with HIM management and leaders of other areas impacting HIM and coding operations
Ensures compliance with established policies and procedures, guidelines, and other regulatory and legal mandates
Produces and shares management and operational reports to HIM management, Revenue Cycle leadership, appropriate clinical departments, and TTUHSC El Paso executive leadership as directed
Recruits, hires, trains, develops, counsels, disciplines, and terminates staff as necessary, in conjunction with the Human Resources Department. Completes annual performance evaluations and assure competence of staff through completion of annual competency assessments
Provides orientation, training and education to staff, providers, and departmental leaders. Ensures thorough understanding of HIM requirements, regulations, policies, procedures, etc.
Understands and complies with standards and regulatory mandates related to health information management, revenue cycle. The Joint Commission (TJC) accreditation standards, Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements, data reporting and submission, and core measures reporting. Responds to request for regulatory audits and reviews
Maintains, understands, and complies with coding guideline and regulatory mandates related to coding and data reporting
Establishes and implements quality monitoring processes for areas of responsibilities. Conducts and monitors quality reviews of operational processes, employee performance, and other focused reviews
Keeps abreast of new technology in coding and coding guidelines; stays informed about future issues impacting the coding functions; and acts as a liaison for other departments regarding coding questions
Adhere to all policies, procedures and practices (Regents Rules, TTUS, HSECEP OPs, etc.).
Personally demonstrate, display and act in accordance with TTUHSC EP's Values (Service, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Advancement, and Teamwork). Serve as a Value's leader while actively promoting and encouraging staff across the institution

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred
Six years progressively responsible management experience
Additional education beyond Bachelor's may substitute for experience on a year for year basis
Licensure/certification
- Current Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification issued through AAPC or AAPC
