Job Description

MAIN FUNCTION:

Responsible for the delivery of pastoral care to patients, their loved ones, and, as appropriate, staff. Has responsibility to ensure that religious and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones are met in areas to which the Staff Chaplain is assigned. Reports to Director of Pastoral Services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assesses patient and family spiritual needs and assists families in using their faith in dealing with illness, trauma, and stress. Visits newly admitted patients and patients with special requests in assigned area. Follows up with patients from previous visits when appropriate. Provides crisis intervention as necessary. May be asked to respond to Codes and Trauma Alerts to provide spiritual and emotional support. Assists in helping families remain informed of patient’s condition. Documents patient and family service provided.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a safe environment and communicate effectively with all age groups of patients served by the Pastoral Care Department.

  • Supports the interdisciplinary approach to pastoral care through participation in team meetings and rounds. Promotes an interdisciplinary approach to pastoral care among volunteers assisting the Pastoral Care Department.

  • Maintains a working relationship between the Pastoral Care Department and medical staff, nursing staff and other departments.

  • Provides pastoral services in such a way as to accomplish the institutional, as well as the departmental objectives. Functions in such a manner that reflects the mission and vision of the institution.

  • Adheres to all Medical Center standards, policies and procedures. Adheres to code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains.

    SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    1. Needs interpersonal skills to work with distressed and anxious patients, families, and employees.
  • Has analytical ability to assess patients’ spiritual needs and sense of well being and to find appropriate solutions to patient problems.

  • Has empathy for the problems experienced by patients and families and commitment to help the distressed.

  • Possesses the communication skills necessary to counsel patients, families, and employees.

  • Attends all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

  • Ability to relate to persons with different educational and cultural backgrounds.

  • Maintains documentation of contacts and communicates patient needs and follow up.

    EDUCATION:

    BA or BS degree from an accredited college or university.

    EXPERIENCE:

    Two years experience performing ministry as a lay leader or ordained clergy (Requires Letter of Endorsement from supervising clergy). Training in a clinical application of counseling skills.

    CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

    No CPR required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Requires light physical effort. May require periods of standing or walking. May require frequent lifting of light weight material and infrequent lifting or moving of heavy weight material. Flow of work and character of duties involve part normal and part concentrated attention.

    EXPOSURE CATEGORY:

    Category II. Tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. But employment may require performing unplanned Category I tasks.
