Lake Erie College Of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) NW PA Pediatric Clerkship Director in ERIE, Pennsylvania

JOB SUMMARY: The NW PA Pediatric Clerkship Director will manage pediatric rotations for 3rd and 4th year LECOM osteopathic medical students in NW PA and the Greater Erie Regional Campus.  The initial focus will be on clinical teaching and clinical precepting students.  Expanded duties will include supervising the overall quality of the clinical curriculum for the pediatric student education experience so that the academic component of this rotation is maintained, including, but not limited to, implementing didactic support to improve student performance. 

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following are a list of Academic Exercises that may be required as a member of the faculty member from time to time:

  • Clinical Teaching and Precepting, to include:
    • Supervising students assigned to your pediatric clerkship service;

``` - Student Teaching and Oversight, to include: - Meet with LECOM students assigned to the Pediatric clerkship on a regular basis; - Complete and review pediatric clerkship rotation evaluations (identifying areas to improve supervision, faculty performance & "Best Practices"); - Viewing online clerkship curriculum and participating in clerkship revisions; - Review student pediatric subject (shelf) exams; - Identify and refer students failing pediatric subject (shelf) exams; - Review COMLEX results to identify area to improve clerkship; - Oversee pediatric didactic exposure for LECOM student assigned to region, including ensuring students participate in OMM didactic/workshop exposure; - Support students efforts to be engaged in research related to clerkship;  - Pediatric Career counseling; - Conducting group meetings and meeting with individual students. - Presenting pediatric lectures for Pre-Clinical students at the LECOM Erie campus for students in the Lecture-Discussion Pathway and conducting teaching sessions for the students in the Direct Study Pathway for selected systems.

``` - Faculty Engagement, to include: - Faculty appointment letters current for pediatric clerkship; - Participation in faculty development to enhance pediatric clerkship; - Utilizing LECOM / LECOM Consortium for Academic Excellence (LCAE) faculty development; - Attend periodic faculty meetings to discuss clerkship strengths and weaknesses; and Exam results and trends;

``` - Pediatric Clerkship administration and development, to include: - Confirming affiliation agreements current with clerkship sites; Completing Clerkship Director written reports as requested; - Conducting formal visits to clerkship training sites in assigned region; - Completing required documents and forms; andClerkship Development: - Identifying unique aspects of this regional campus for pediatric clerkship clinical experiences; - Update prospective & retrospective clerkship data; - Identifying opportunities for clerkship growth; - Work collaboratively with the Department of Clinical Education to ensure that students are meeting all goals and objectives of the Pediatrics rotation as outlined in clinical curriculum; - Obtain student feedback on the quality of their pediatric clinical training; - Work collaboratively with the LECOM Department of Clinical Education and the Regional Deans to share pediatric curriculum and collect performance data on regional clinical campus students at each site; - Work collaboratively with our student online clinical course curriculum educator to ensure students are appropriately using the online resources, answering the weekly questions, and completing the discipline-specific exams for pediatrics; - Participate in telephonic or internet-based meetings with the Clinical Deans and/or Regional Deans to discuss pediatric curriculum development and rotations as needed; - Facilitate pediatric didactic sessions with students to enhance their pediatric medical knowledge base, case presentation skills, and conduct a case-based discussion session with them.  It is appropriate to engage residents as co-facilitators in this role; - Provide quarterly written status reports to the Associate Dean in Clinical Education; - Monitor key assessment metrics including pediatric shelf exams for clinical experience at regional sites; - Assure a uniform clinical and academic exposure for students at clinical sites to pediatrics; - Preparation of educational tools (A/V, demonstration models, lectures, lesson plans...etc.);  - Preparation of Clinical exercises that parallel real-life clinic protocol and procedure by means of case-based models; - Preparation of demonstrations, lectures, small group discussions, and the selection of suggested and required reading from various sources, and coordinating these educational tools with other faculty members; - Prepare evaluation tools that will aid in the evaluation of students' work product and help to identify students that are discovered to be weak in various areas; - Attend "Team" meetings approved by COM that require advancement of your profession; - Must be able to take direction and receive assignments from the Associate Dean in Clinical Education; - Prepare course syllabus in detail, to include, all assignments, readings both for laboratory exercises and discussions (examinations) that will guide the student through the rigorous curriculum; and - Must allocate time to complete all tasks necessary to support pediatric clinical curriculum development and student instruction.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

Knowledge of general medical coding and related information in the field;

Must be accurate and attentive to detail;  

Must be trained and certified on the Institutional Data System;

Must have great skills in diagnosis and treatment planning in general dentistry;

Maintaining an established work schedule;

Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills, including tact and diplomacy;

Effectively using organizational and planning skills, including attention to detail and follow-through;

Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands;
