UPMC Patient Care Technician, Pediatrics in Erie, Pennsylvania

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join the Pediatrics unit in the Women’s Hospital!

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides patient care, including assisting with procedures, activities of daily living, and various therapies.

  • Performs core nursing assistant responsibilities (e.g., blood glucose, vital signs, specimen collections) and additional tasks (e.g., phlebotomy, EKG, catheter care).

  • Reports equipment malfunctions and communicates effectively with other departments.

  • Builds professional, respectful relationships and contributes to unit activities (e.g., responding to call lights, passing meal trays, transporting patients).

  • Receives feedback, identifies learning needs, and takes action to improve skills and performance.

  • Provides patient and family instruction under the RN's direction and may apply, monitor, and remove restraints as needed.

  • Communicates clearly with the healthcare team, demonstrating cultural awareness and supporting workplace safety.

  • Adheres to all policies and safety procedures, maintaining accurate documentation.

  • Supports department changes, projects, and quality initiatives.

  • Performs advanced skills based on department needs (e.g., phlebotomy, IV removal, EKG, NG tube management).

  • Completes assigned tasks efficiently and supports department operations through clerical duties as needed.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Must have one of the following: 1 year of general healthcare experience, 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency, enrollment in a PT/OT/PA program with one clinical rotation completed, or a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.

  • Completion of UPMC patient care technician class and basic information system training.

  • Microcomputer experience preferred. Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • EMT or Paramedic experience or enrollment in such a program preferred.

  • Limited access to medications, restricted to distribution to a nurse. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal within 90 days of hire or transfer.

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

  • ACLS preferred.
