UPMC Respiratory Therapist CRT & RRT- Night Program in Erie, Pennsylvania

Under the general direction of a physician and by prescription, you will provide respiratory therapy services and life support to patients with cardiopulmonary deficiencies and abnormalities. UPMC Hamot is a 423-bed hospital offering a full complement of inpatient and outpatient services and serves as a regional referral hub and Level II Trauma Center. This position is sign-on bonus eligible! Candidates with 1+ years of experience are eligible for a $15,000 sign-on bonus with a 2 year employment commitment.

Candidates will be placed on the appropriate step of the career ladder based on their experience and licensure.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate Medical Orders: Assess the appropriateness of medical orders and interpret clinical data to optimize patient outcomes.

  • Operate Respiratory Equipment: Set up and manage devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators. Ensure equipment operates within specified parameters and administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs.

  • Monitor and Adjust Treatments: Observe equipment function, adjust settings for optimal therapy results, and inspect/test equipment for safety and efficiency.

  • Patient Transport and Emergency Response: Assist in transporting mechanically ventilated patients and respond to all code situations.

  • Maintain Patient Records: Keep detailed patient charts with pertinent identification and therapy information. Order repairs when needed.

  • Training and Supervision: Demonstrate respiratory care procedures to trainees and other healthcare personnel, and supervise students during their training.

  • Assess and Plan Treatments: Read prescriptions, measure arterial blood gases, and review patient information to determine treatment requirements. Decide on the best methods for administering inhalants and necessary precautions.

  • Monitor Patient Responses: Track physiological responses to therapy, perform bronchopulmonary drainage, assist with breathing exercises, and conduct pulmonary function tests. Consult with physicians in case of adverse reactions.

Respiratory Therapist, RRT Requirements:

  • Graduate of a Co ARC (Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) approved Respiratory program required

  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required

  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation required

  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRTT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required prior to expiration of temporary practice permit

  • Respiratory therapists who receive their CRT credential from the NBRC after July 1, 2002 are required to maintain certification under the NBRC requirements

Sr Respiratory Therapy, RRT Requirements:

  • Graduate of a Co ARC (Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) approved Respiratory program

  • In lieu of an Associates degree, must have 5 to 7 years of experience or have an NBRC Certification

  • Two (2) years of total respiratory care experience with a minimum of one (1) year in critical care

  • Must successfully complete one (1) approved project from the department's project list during each annual performance review period. Project approved within 3 months of hire

Respiratory Therapist, CRT Requirements:

  • Graduate of a Co ARC (Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) approved Respiratory program required OR students who have received a temporary license are permitted to begin employment with approval from the Human Resources department along with their official transcripts.

  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation required Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRTT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required prior to expiration of temporary practice permit.

  • Respiratory therapists who receive their CRT credential from the NBRC after July 1, 2002 are required to maintain certification under the NBRC requirements

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT)

  • Osteopathic Respiratory Care OR Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP)

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
