The Technologist is responsible for planning, conducting, developing, and validating materials and process testing to support the Material & Process Engineering (M&PE) needs of the aerospace and industrial businesses within the Noise, Vibration, and Harshness Division. This role involves hands-on work with rubber compounding, adhesive application, metal preparation, elastomer bonding, following/developing test procedures, and running/diagnosing/developing associated laboratory equipment.

  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain standard and non-standard tests and associated equipment including:

    • Hydraulically actuated elastomer test equipment and custom fatigue machines.

    • ASTM testing of elastomer, adhesives, coatings, and other materials.

    • Corrosion, abrasion, adhesion, compatibility, and other testing.

    • Preparation of specimens required for testing.

    • Establish priorities for projects based on resource availability and due dates, collaborating closely with the M&PE team to resolve conflicts.

    • Maintain accurate and complete records, including service request data, notes, photographs, and reports for all assigned testing and material development activities.

    • Ensure compliance with all safety rules, consistently practice safe working habits, and provide guidance to others on safety standards.

    • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to report test results and project status clearly and promptly.

    • Ensure the calibration of all equipment in use is up-to-date.

    • Mentor and train less experienced colleagues on equipment operation, test procedures, data recording, and best practices.

    • Identify, develop, and implement (or assist in the implementation of) continuous improvement initiatives related to systems, test methodologies, capital improvements, etc.

    • Analyze data, screen for anomalies, and compare results against provided specifications when applicable.

    • Collaborate to plan, define, and execute experiments in a thorough and scientific manner, applying principles of adhesive science, rubber compounding, molding, and testing.

    • Writing controlling specifications when improving existing or developing new equipment, materials, or processes.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate's or vocational degree in a related technical discipline and 6 years of related experience; or 8+ years relevant work experience; or Bachelor's degree and 4 years related work experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret written instructions, including test plans, product/tooling drawings, work instructions, operating procedures, service requests, and specifications.

  • Skilled in operating laboratory equipment and performing routine and non-routine tests under minimal supervision, as required by the individual's role within the team.

  • Excellent communication skills, including conveying job status and results verbally and in writing.

  • Excellent time management skills and ability to work efficiently in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and cultivate strong customer relationships.

  • Willingness to learn and carry out a diverse range of material testing.
