This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at the Flagstaff Mountain campus with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

Job Description

Performs a variety of coordination and support duties related to billing and collection function of assigned unit to ensure compliance with best billing practices, electronic billing regulations and HIPAA. Monitors and troubleshoots accounts payable and receivable, performs financial reporting and performs general administrative support functions. Applies specialized functional knowledge to independently analyze and respond to administrative matters within established limits. Uses discretion, exercises initiative, independence, and judgment to handle differing office situations in accordance with supervisor\'s guidelines referring more difficult and sensitive problems to supervisor. May provide work direction to other clerical staff and student employees. This position reports to the Manager, Revenue Cycle.

Billing and Collections - 35%

  • Coordinates the processing and submission of all patient medical claims.
  • Monitors receivables and pursues delinquent accounts.
  • Reviews patient claims for accuracy and completeness and troubleshoots problems with carriers.

Health Insurance Management - 35%

  • Manage the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). This includes but is not limited to ensuring students meet the eligibility requirements to participate in the plan, processing F1J1 and Graduate Waivers, referrals, auto-renewals, and any reporting related to the SHIP. This includes working closely with the Graduate College and the Center for International Education.

Promote and Administer Health Plans - 15%

  • Enroll & re-enroll eligible students in the LouieCare Discount Plan and Student Insurance Plan.
  • Sell plans, provide information regarding plans, participate in student orientations and information fairs, answer questions, bill/process payments for plans, and assist patients with problems & issues regarding coverages.

Administrative Support and Cashiering - 10%

  • Assist with answering phones, cashiering, closing & completion of daily sales reports & related daily journal entry using PeopleSoft Financials in a busy office environment.

Other - 5%

  • Assist with other projects and tasks daily as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor\'s degree in accounting or related field.
  • Three years of work experience in a medical clinic setting with an electronic health record (EHR.)
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in Medical Billing and/or Medical Coding or comparable experience.

  • Knowledge of medical claims processing of evaluation and treatment services.
  • Knowledge of policies, practices, procedures, and terminology of assigned function. Knowledge of standard billing and collection practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.
