Under limited supervision performs security work of routine difficulty in the supervision, care, and welfare of inmates detained in the Jail facility; performs related work as assigned.

  • Starting pay is \$20.03 per hour, with an increase to \$20.64 per hour after completion of FTO, then \$21.25 per hour after successful completion of Academy, and \$21.89 per hour after one year as a Detention Officer I.
  • Starting Pay for Lateral transfer will start between\$21.25 and \$24.63per hour

Typical Duties

(Illustrative Only)\ Maintains the safety and physical security of the Jail facility\ Responds to and manages emergency or crisis situations, using communication skills to resolve volatile situations\ Responds to and manages life-threatening, potential life-threatening and hazardous situations\ Manages housing units of up to 144 occupants\ Controls, supervises and documents the movement and activities of inmates\ Conducts inspections, searches (including pat-downs and strip searches) and security checks of inmate housing areas\ Administers first aid including exposure to blood and bio-hazardous materials\ Maintains detention records\ Performs routine receptionist and clerical duties\ Works with detention statistics and computer data\ Supervises the activities of visitors, support personnel and program volunteers\ Conducts inventories of detention supplies and commodities\ Distributes and collects all incoming and outgoing mail\ Assists in securing firearms and ammunition in the gun locker\ Conducts manual and automated criminal history checks\ Examines and interprets court orders and release documents to determine correct court, housing needs and releases\ Appears in court and/or hearings as a witness\ Assists with the jail facility\'s level of cleanliness per standards\ \ Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: driving; standing and walking to work within jail population on different levels; climbing stairs; working with and around other detention staff, administrative staff, inmates and the public; dealing with interruptions; vision-acuity-near, needed for facility safety, computers, equipment, etc; hearing-ordinary conversation, speech-ordinary conversation, loud talking, and touch-finger dexterity needed for facility safety, computers, live scan, equipment, inmates, citizens, alarms, radio equipment and overhead paging, etc. Exposure to noise from inmates, citizens, other employees, alarms, paging system, etc., and exposure to odors such as pest control, kitchen, cleaning supplies, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien. Must be 19 years of age at the time of appointment to the position. Must reside within Coconino County upon appointment to the position. Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.\ \ ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:\ Must obtain an Arizona driver\'s license upon appointment to the position and main ain it throughout employment. Must successfully pass a written examination, interview board, and physical agility test. Must successfully complete a background check, polygraph examination, and medical examination. Must not have a felony conviction within the last ten years or dishonorable discharge from the military. Must not have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence within the previous five years. Must not have used dangerous/narcotic drugs in the past five years for more than experimentation. Must successfully complete a minimum of 240 hours of correctional training within twelve months of employment.
