Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Flint is looking for an experienced Director of Facilities & Operations who will lead a team that is responsible for a wide range of tasks relating to the seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operations of the campus facilities and grounds.

The Director will provide strategic leadership and management for construction and renovation projects, custodial services, building and grounds maintenance, mailroom operations, shipping and receiving services, environment health & safety and other related campus facilities operations.

The Director of Facilities & Operations reports to the Vice Chancellor of Business and Finance.

Responsibilities*

The Director is responsible for the delivery of a variety of Facilities & Operations support services to the campus community, including but not limited to the following:

  • Provide visionary and operational leadership and management oversight for approximately 80 staff and student employees, maintaining a strong customer service focus and create and maintain a culture which promotes a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Participate in campus and business and finance strategic planning efforts and manage the translation and implementation of adopted strategies/policies/practices to operational completions
  • Responsible for delivering a variety of high-quality campus support services with an emphasis on sustainability. Support services include construction and renovation project management, architecture and engineering, environment, health and safety services, grounds; repair/maintenance, custodial services, shipping-receiving, mail services and inventory control; purchase and distribution of utilities in an ever-greening environment, and electrical and HVAC systems oversight and maintenance, including the central energy plant.
  • Responsible for and manages a $5.9 million general fund budget plus an additional $2+ million in deferred maintenance and special project budgets.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates staff, intervenes and addresses performance issues.
  • Manage interpersonal relationships, processes, activities, and operations across the Facilities and Operations department, and within the Business and Finance area, the entire Flint campus, University of Michigan, and the Flint Community. Demonstrate honesty, truthfulness, and integrity and is ethical in everyday behavior and builds trust through sincere, respectful and fair interactions and dealings with others.
  • Administers and manages several collective bargaining agreements including AFSCME and various skilled trade unions.
Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree in a relevant area which may include engineering, architecture, or management

10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management which must include but is not limited to:

  • 8 or more years of supervisory and administrative experience
  • Demonstrated experience in the following:
    • Leading a workforce of skilled and unskilled trades employees in daily building maintenance and operations.
    • Administering and managing collective bargaining agreements
    • Developing and managing a financial budget.
    • Successful management and implementation of programs and projects in a diverse and complex organization with demonstrated success in managing people, finances, and projects.
    • Knowledge and experience with facility preservation, deferred maintenance, renovation, capital project planning/design and new construction.
