Essential Functions:

  • Overall responsibility for Mercury Marine's Global Safety & Occupational Health efforts by leading the strategy, programming, planning and brand development of safety, working with manufacturing, distribution, engineering and support teams to build a world class safety culture that engages every employee.

  • Lead, direct and supervise Mercury’s safety and occupational health team of managers, safety leaders, ergonomist and professional staff covering 30 sites.

  • Overall responsibility to organize and host Mercury’s annual Safety Summit, including best practice sharing, S.A.F.E. award and ERGO cup in support of annual safety planning.

  • Ensure continuity of safety/occupational health programming by hosting and coordinating monthly HSE Council, quarterly business reviews, safety alerts and critical communications.

  • Work with business partners to mitigate risks for foundry (aluminum and steel), machining, paint/coating, assembly, engineering and distribution operations, including compliance, incident investigation and corrective action.

  • Provide subject matter expertise, including, but not limited to: lockout, machine safety, confined space, powered industrial trucks, automation, hazardous chemicals/materials, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, vehicle/pedestrian and emergency planning/response. Working knowledge and oversight of occupational health processes, including injury/illness reporting, occ health/pre-employment screening, early intervention, substance abuse, return to work, safe for work/fit for duty, worker’s compensation, etc

  • Develop policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols to ensure compliance, consistency and alignment of safety efforts and initiatives.

  • Ensure a high level of visibility and engagement on safety/occ health issues with union leadership at Wisconsin locations.

  • Ensure training development planning for compliance, risk mitigation and leadership to ensure knowledgeable and educated workforce.

  • Responsible for reporting and refining leading and lagging metrics goals, reporting systems and dashboards to support objectives, accountability and engagement.

  • Global leadership and support for international region operations located in Europe, Canada, Brazil, China and Australia.

  • Oversight of Safety Management System (SMS) to ensure active site engagement in requisite areas of management participation, employee engagement, hazard control, inspection and audit.

  • Evaluate & determine injury recording per OSHA, Mercury, and Brunswick protocols.

  • Maintain strong working relationship with OSHA for primary operations in Wisconsin and in other states where company operations are located.

  • Provide compliance strategy guidance for emerging programs and standards (i.e. NEPs, REPs, etc.).

  • Serve as the Mercury primary point of contact for all reporting, complaints, inspections, responses, negotiations and settlements.

  • Working with leadership team to develop strategies, communications and implementation protocols in response to pandemic/public health issues that may emerge.

  • Conduct assessments for acquired facilities to identify risks and opportunities to enhance safety.

  • Oversight of annual safety award processes, including identification of sites based on objective criteria and subjective evaluation, recognition event planning and guidance.

  • Serve as liaison/representative with local community and state organizations on matters of safety, health, emergency response, training and planning.

Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way.

Required Qualifications:

  • 20+ years experience in EHS field, majority in safety/occupational health related aspects in manufacturing environment preferred. Related experience in distribution, process industries and construction may be considered.

  • Bachelors (advanced degree highly preferred) in safety, engineering or related technology/sciences (i.e. chemistry, biology, math, industrial technology, public health, etc.)

  • 5+ years experience in supervision/management, leading both hourly and salaried professionals.

  • Significant experience with safety/occupational health strategy development and programming including leadership, safety culture, management participation, employee engagement, program development, goals/objectives, auditing and investigation.

  • Strong technical knowledge and experience in key safety elements to include: Lockout, machine safety, confined space, powered industrial trucks, automation, hazardous chemicals/materials, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, vehicle/pedestrian, emergency planning/response.

  • Strong technical knowledge and previous experience working with OSHA (federal and state plans), compliance programming, reporting, inspection management, negotiations and settlements.

  • Working knowledge of occupational health including: injury/illness reporting, treatment, occ health screening, substance abuse, return to work, safe for work/fit for duty, etc.

  • Working knowledge of workers compensation (i.e. case management, RTW, IME, reserves, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in safety, engineering or related technology/sciences (i.e. chemistry, biology, math, industrial technology, public health, etc.)

  • Professional certification highly preferred: CSP, P.E., CIH, CHMM or related certification

  • Experience with an organized labor environment.

  • Experience with pandemic response, internal and external management highly preferred.

  • Experience with safety/risk assessment for M&A, integration and development preferred.
