This is a full-time exempt position.

SUMMARY: The Laboratory Supervisor supervises the chemistry and microbiology lab personnel with direct reports of the assistant chemist/microbiologists. The duties will require close communication with the lab manager to assist with any needed tasks to improve lab operation. This will include responsibilities of overseeing the staff scheduling, communication between laboratory and business team related to testing issues, late sample reporting, clarification of customer test instructions, ordering supplies to keep operations going and any other duty assigned by management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following. Management retains the right to add to or change the duties of the position at anytime. The functions below are to be performed in accordance with all applicable FDA, OSHA, EPA, and ISO standards and regulations.

Work with lab manager to assign testing of samples submitted to the laboratory.

Manage lab staff schedules including daily schedule, vacation requests, and re-arranging staff for urgent test requirements.

Staff training is a key duty. Ensuring staff are proficient with methods, on-going method training, cross-training to have multiple analysts trained on methods to cover for vacations and influx of samples on methods needing more coverage.

Ensure staff training is properly documented and follow-up with staff when this documentation is not completed or improperly completed.

Assist lab manager in reviewing, tracking and trending issues related to proficiency of methods, OOS results that are due to dilution, calculation, pipetting or other human error, and any other training related testing issue.

Troubleshoot anomalous results generated by the laboratory. Perform testing in support of OOS investigations.

Observe lab staff on a routine schedule to note any improvements in methods and/or techniques that could be implemented.

First line of communication with lab staff on testing errors, improper signoffs on results, TV, notebook errors, being late or improperly following scheduled shifts, or any other staff related correction needed. Proper documentation is required with each incident/communication. Lab Manager, General Manager, and HR are happy to help and are available to assist with any staff related issue that arises.

Being an ISO 17025 lab proper record-keeping is required. Staff need to be organized and efficient in reporting, peer-review, TV, and archiving of laboratory testing & calibration data. Responsibilities will include ensuring that staff are following all SOP’s to make sure all record-keeping is accurate.

Ensure both labs have the needed supplies for daily operation and calibration activities. Improve systems to keep supplies at appropriate levels and work with business team to stay ahead of backorders.

Assist lab manager with all lab operation duties including but not limited to results review, COA release, OOS investigation, internal customer communication, business team communication, lab staff communication, training activities and any other operational assistance required.

Assist lab management and executive management in knowing the resources needed for lab operation and improvement. Keep risks analysis in mind along with safety to forecast resources for budgeting and future needs.

Perform other roles and responsibilities per the Quality Manual and Quality Procedures.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Demonstrate expertise and proficiency with advanced analytical techniques and state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation.

Be able to read, analyze, interpret and author testing methods and standard operating procedures.

Be able to work independently, and to interact with scientific peers in an effective manner.

Be willing to work extended hours, weekends and holidays when needed.

The position requires extensive standing. The employee is regularly required to walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field and at least five years of laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous supervisory experience a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : Work is carried out in an analytical laboratory within a factory setting. There is considerable exposure to raw materials and chemical reagents. Personal Protective Equipment such as lab coats, gloves, safety glasses and respirators must be worn as defined by safety policy.
