Description of Work Unit

Veterinary Teaching Hospital

At the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ), we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. This work unit exists to care for the basic needs of animals at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and to provide routine disinfection and service to all areas of the hospital, which serves as a teaching facility for veterinary students, as a medical facility for veterinary research, and as a public animal health clinic for exotic, large and small animals.

The equine unit is an integral part of the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital which provides 24 hour emergency/intensive care to critically ill or injured equines at a tertiary level teaching hospital; simultaneously provide clinical instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, veterinary technicians, graduate veterinarians and others with an emphasis on practical applications of internal medicine, anesthesia, emergency procedures, emergency surgery, endoscopy, intensive care management and neonatal critical care management.

Position Summary

Step into a Unique Role: Become an Equine Podiatry Program Assistant!

Do you have a passion for horses and a keen interest in their hoof health? Our Equine Podiatry Program at Colorado State University is looking for a dedicated Program Assistant to join our team. This exciting role offers the chance to work closely with experts in equine podiatry, contributing to the care and well-being of our equine patients. If you’re detail-oriented, enthusiastic, and ready to support groundbreaking work in equine health, we want to hear from you. Help us ensure our horses stay happy, healthy, and on their best hooves!

The Equine Podiatry Initiative is new program at CSU focusing on podiatry education for veterinary students, developing an equine clinical program, and supporting our programs with equine podiatry research. We are seeking a part-time program coordinator who will also act as a part-time veterinary technician for this service, functioning in multiple capacities within this role. This position will serve to support the CSU faculty and outside veterinarians in their educational and clinical endeavors.

  • Responsibilities would support educational initiatives, which would include gathering laboratory supplies, organizing horses and facilities for student labs throughout the academic year, facilitating student laboratories in partnership with outside veterinarians, working with podiatry instructors to gather lecture and laboratory teaching material for student education, facilitating once weekly online evening lectures during spring semester, recognizing and developing new curriculum opportunities with Podiatry instructors, and creating regular continuing education opportunities for students, horse owners, DVMs, and farriers.

  • The duties of this position will be to support the clinical program with responsibilities to include assisting as a veterinary technician in the Podiatry Center (2 days per 6 weeks), gathering case information from clients/referring DVMs/farriers for podiatry cases, management of podiatry inventory of supplies and medications, and to assist in development of podiatry caseload by contributing ideas to make Podiatry center more sustainable, efficient, and successful. Participate in monthly conference calls with the service team, as well as to collaborate with CSU CVMBS (College office) Development team for fundraising.

  • Other responsibilities will arise with continued development of our educational and clinical programming. Ideally, this person would be a motivated individual, self-starter, develop new ideas to bring to the group, and not just wait to be told the next steps of the day. There will be no direct daily oversight and some of the work may be performed remotely.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree.

  • 1 year working as a veterinary technician in a veterinary setting.

  • 2 years of horse handling experience.

  • Teaching or educational environment experience.
