Description of Work Unit

The CSU Equine Reproduction Program has developed leading-edge equine reproduction techniques for the equine industry for over 45 years. Techniques such as collection of semen and artificial insemination, recovery and transfer of equine embryos, shipping cooled semen, and shipping cooled embryos are now routine in the equine industry, due in large part to the research, education, and outreach efforts of the CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory.

Position Summary

Hiring 2, 9-month Stallion Service Assistant positions at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory ( ERL ).

These positions support the stallion program for the Equine Reproduction Laboratory. The positions will be following the daily duties assigned, to include stallion care, participating in breeding practices and techniques, frozen semen inventory assistance and helping maintain a clean and organized laboratory.

These are essential worker positions and must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption beginning on February 10. 2025 and ending October 31, 2025.

Position Minimum Qualifications

  • 4-year degree in related field of study (equine science or animal science).

or

  • 2-year degree in related field and 2 years of dedicated experience with horses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Works well in difficult situations; good organization skills; good written and verbal skills.

  • Knowledge of working with stallions and their behavior to maintain a safe environment.

  • The skill to assess the situation for safety concerns and make changes quickly to keep a safe environment.

  • 1 year of experience working with stallions.

  • Breeding farm understanding.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Able to assess and assist management on each stallion appropriately based on temperament and individual needs regarding grooming, turnout, exercise and feeding.

  • Undergo or perform assessments regarding stallion health and welfare, weight, or exercise needed with staff oversight. This is critical to the welfare of the stallions during their time at the ERL for maximum performance during the breeding season and maintain a quality of care that the client is comfortable with.

  • Grooming, turnout and daily maintenance of stallions and tease mare.

  • Weekend grooming, turnout and motility checks.

  • Assists with semen collection, processing, and post collection clean up.

  • Monitor Stallions supplements and replace and organize as needed.

  • Weekend and holiday work schedule is required as we are a working facility with animals that need care every day.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Supports stallion service and faculty with classes teaching with stallions and semen collection, this is mandatory because it always involves multiple people to complete the collection and teaching aspect.

  • Helps prepare lab space and organizes class supplies, this is important to make sure adequate supplies to teach the lab are identified for the purpose of teaching. Some of the classes held at the ERL are VM744, ANEQ344, ANEQ102, ANEQ344, ANEQ442, ANEQ386b, JR Practicum, SR Rotation, BMS642.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well stocked laboratory.

  • Keep the barn and round pen tidy and clean.

  • Daily cleaning and disinfecting breeding supplies/dishes as well as the collection shed and the stallion barn.

  • Follow a set SOP protocol established on how to properly clean and disinfect all breeding dishes, collection shed, and items used for biosecurity reasons.
