Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition has 32 faculty and adjunct members and 23 research associates and administrative staff, 600 undergraduate students and offers undergraduate degrees in Nutrition and Food Science, Hospitality Management and Fermentation Science and Technology. The department also offers MS and PhD degrees in Nutrition Science, Community Nutrition and Food Science and Safety and currently has 75 graduate students. Department research is supported by federal grants from NIH , USDA , foundations, industry and two endowments that support a faculty chair and the Lillian Fountain-Smith Nutrition Conference hosted by the department. Research has focused on childhood obesity, community nutrition among limited resource audiences, molecular and metabolic nutrition targeted at chronic disease prevention, bioactive food components, and food safety.

The department’s Extension faculty is responsible for numerous creative, high impact educational and engagement programs throughout the state, including EFNEP . A MPH program focus area in Public Health Nutrition within the School of Public Health provides new collaborative opportunities. The department offers an accredited B.S. dietetics program and an M.S. coordinated dietetic internship program. With the overall growth in the department, faculty and student diversity has increased. Position Summary

This position includes interaction with the Principal Investigator as well as other research assistants. The individual will be part of a team of researchers completing a federally funded research project and will have a broad range of responsibilities which may include but are not limited to:

  • General lab organization and ordering of supplies.

  • Management of records associated with compliance with Human or Animal Institutional Review Board protocols and guidelines.

  • Recruitment, screening, and testing of human research participants.

  • Exercise testing and training of human volunteers.

  • Survey testing of human participants.

  • Data collection and subsequent analysis using custom computer programs.

  • Data entry and management of electronic data records.

  • Statistical analysis.

  • Training other personnel in data collection and analysis.

  • Supervision of the activities of undergraduate and graduate student research assistants.

  • Physiological experiments with animals.

  • Handling of laboratory animals and tissue/blood samples.

  • Participation in professional development opportunities as appropriate.

  • Write reports, check documentation, maintain inventory, maintain critical data, insure compliance with grant criteria, supervise administrative support staff.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Dietetics, Fermentation, Hospitality Management, or related field.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.

  • For basic science research positions, experience with basic biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell culture techniques.

  • Experience in observational research, surveys and questionnaires.

  • Other research experience with data collection and analysis, familiarity with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and a statistical software package.

  • Prior experience in the day-to-day organization of research projects, including recruitment of and contact with study participants, coordination of data collection activities, and data management.
