Description of Work Unit

LOCATION : The San Luis Valley Research Center ( SLVRC ) is located in Center, Colorado, 9 miles north of Monte Vista, in the San Luis Valley. The San Luis Valley is unique in that it is one of the largest, high altitude (7,600 ft.), irrigated crop production areas in the United States. The area is surrounded by 12,000-14,000 foot mountains.

ABOUT SAN LUIS VALLEY RESEARCH CENTER : The Colorado State University potato program is based at the San Luis Valley Research Center which is engaged in various potato research programs including breeding and selection, pathology, crop management and field physiology, postharvest physiology, and seed certification.

Faculty located at the SLVRC are members of an academic department at Colorado State University and report to the respective department head.

Position Summary

The Manager has authority and responsibility for management and stewardship of the financial resources, staff personnel, infrastructure (land, buildings, technology, etc.), and operational and administrative functions of the SLVRC to support faculty research, educational and outreach programs.This stewardship is exercised by planning, executing, and optimizing SLVRC resources and their deployment. This is a full-time, twelve-month, Administrative Professional position. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. A signing bonus of up to $5,000 may be considered for successful candidates. Position reports to the Director of the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station or designee.

Required Job Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor’s Degree, OR Associate’s degree plus two years of professional work experience, OR High School Diploma (or GED ) plus four years of professional experience. Degree(s) and/or professional experience with an emphasis in field crop production.

  • Professional experience in managing an entity involved in research, agricultural production or in a related commercial enterprise environment.

  • Demonstrated ability and expertise for developing relationships and engaging in activities with diverse clientele, communities and stakeholders.

  • Excellent written, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Current Colorado Commercial Qualified Supervisor Pesticide Applicator License, or a demonstrated ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.

  • Working knowledge and experience in the application of word processing, spreadsheet, and other farm management software.

  • Experience in personnel management and supervision.

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of this position which includes some heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs during planting and harvest on a daily basis may be assisted by dolly/person), manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and handling.

  • Ability to work in outdoor, environmental conditions such as inclement weather

  • Commitment to professional conduct reflecting CSU’s Principles of Community.

  • Experience in safe and proficient operation of farm and other heavy machinery such as tractors, harvesters, loaders, forklifts, and farm trucks.

  • Knowledge and experience in crop production or other agribusiness enterprises.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Completed Master’s Degree in an ag economics, agri-tech, crop science, life science or business administration related discipline.

  • Experience developing and managing a budget.

  • Experience in compliance with university, state and federal rules and regulations.

  • Possess basic mechanical skills for equipment maintenance and repair.

  • Meaningful experience and participation in one or more agricultural research program(s), and an understanding of remote agricultural experiment stations mission and their challenges.

  • Assist the Assistant Manager, Farm Technicians and laborers with field work and repairs as needed.

  • Maintain communication with the SLVRC staff to develop farm operation and research plot servicing priorities, e.g. repairs and purchases, so as to optimally support faculty programs and the SLVRC’s cash crop enterprise. Advise the staff as needed on crop health and nutrition decisions.

  • Organize, develop and deploy the systems, processes, or policies necessary to support SLVRC activities including the hiring, training and development of staff and administer their mid-year and annual evaluations around individual performance goals.

  • Assure that SLVRC programs are effectively supported.

  • Allocate financial resources with the funding provided by the AES by developing the objectives, budgets, financial and administrative processes, controls and oversight to

meet AES and University requirements.

  • Collaborate with the Fiscal Officer in the allocation of funds provided by the AES by identifying objectives and utilizing budgets, financial and administrative processes, controls and

oversight to meet AES and University requirements.

  • Plan for and execute cash crop production and sales whose income will be available resources for SLVRC priorities and reserves required to meet University and AES requirements for

operating self-funded operations. Arrange both crop storage and harvest contracts for the cash crops. Maintain land use records.

  • Oversee maintenance of and compliance with the Good Agricultural Practices ( GAP ), Colorado Fully-Certified Seed Potato Grower status, and Organic certifications.

  • Assume responsibility for compliance with all university, state and federal rules and regulations

  • Maintain the research station’s farm upkeep and field appearances to facilitate positive public, community, grower and stakeholder perceptions of Colorado State University’s investment in the San Luis Valley.

renovations, decommissioning and new construction.
