Electromagnetic Effects Engineer – HIRF Lightning UM

Responsible for representing Bell aircraft commercial programs as a subject matter expert to certification authorities, suppliers, and industry consortiums in the area of Avionics and Electrical Systems in support of aircraft Type Certification for both foreign and domestic certification activities on 14 CFR Part 29 aircraft.

This role will be an integral part of the team, working closely with internal customers and the FAA.

You’ll be able to hone your technical abilities on significant engineering problems, all while gaining experience in leadership and communication.

Work location is onsite in Fort Worth, TX.

What you’ll be doing as an Electromagnetic Effects Engineer- HIRF Lightning UM:

  • Responsible for design, development, and certification support of avionics, electrical systems, and HIRF/Lightning on Bell Commercial Aircraft.

  • Prepare and/or approve certification plans, conformity requests, equipment qualification test plans/results, system safety documents, ground and flight test plans/results and certification reports showing avionics and electrical systems compliance with 14 CFR Part 29.

  • Review engineering design data for aircraft systems prepared using computer based drafting tools (Siemens Capital Harness System and/or CATIA V6).

  • Evaluate and analyze aircraft system designs for completion of function hazard assessments and system safety assessments.

  • Assist in the development of HIRF/Lighting maintenance requirements and Instructions for Continued Airworthiness for aircraft systems.

  • Witness equipment qualification, system level, and aircraft level testing at Bell, supplier, or other testing facilities.

  • Support investigation, root cause analysis, corrective action, and ODA/FAA coordination of aircraft field issues and component failures when warranted for certification concerns.

  • Coordinate with FAA personnel and other Bell engineering disciplines such as Airworthiness, Electronic Development Group, Project, Flight Test, Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Mechanical Systems, ECS and System Safety.

  • Participate in industry committees as a representative for Bell to support advancing HIRF/Lightning and Electromagnetic Effects design, test, and certification aspects.

Qualifications

Skills You Bring To this Role:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other related Engineering field

  • At least 6 years’ experience required, 10 years preferred as FAA designee (ODA UM or DER) -14CFR Part 29 DER/DOA AR/ODA Unit Member electrical certification experience – Part 29 preferred; Part 25 or Part 27 experience would be considered

What you need to be successful:

  • We are looking for inquisitive and driven engineers with a passion to innovate.

  • Design knowledge of electrical bonding criteria, P-Static protection, EMI shielding, and High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF ) / Indirect Effects of Lightning (IEL) installation criteria is desired.

  • Experience with the application of RTCA DO-160 relative to systems certification on aircraft is required.

  • Experience with the System Safety certification process per SAE ARP4754 and ARP4761 is desired.

  • Must be able to coordinate, communicate and maintain good working relations with FAA specialists.

  • Strong computer, written and verbal communication skills are required.

  • Time management skills are required to work multiple concurrent projects/priorities of various size and scope.
