Summary

Distribution Asset Planning provides engineers an opportunity to expand their technical knowledge of the distribution system while growing their communication and business skills when providing support to the financial obligations of Oncor. We provide support to Distribution Design, Operations, Substation Engineering, System Protection, DPMO, Regulatory, and many other Oncor working groups in order to upgrade, expand, repair, maintain and reliably operate assets safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements. Distribution Planning is responsible for the orderly and economic expansion of the electric substations and distribution system to meet present and future demand while providing high quality, reliable electric service at a competitive cost.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Directly or through others, the incumbent will:

  • Resolve electric system issues and effectively communicate detailed documentation and plans of a complex design with other work groups.

  • Incorporate employee and public safety as a priority into the design and operation of all projects.

  • Effectively manage a significant number of projects while maintaining work product quality, consistency, accuracy and reliability.

  • Promote environmental responsibility, corporate citizenship, and ethical conduct while setting a standard of excellence.

  • Maintain a current knowledge of electric utility rules, technical, administrative and regulatory requirements for reliable, safe operation of the system.

  • Work independently and be able to train and coach newer less experienced engineers.

  • Ability to apply analysis to identify the best solution to a technical problem, and to effectively communicate and commit to a course of action that is consistent with all legal, regulatory, code, standard, or other requirements as well as corporate policies and procedures

  • Provide timely and accurate protective settings that conform to Distribution Protection philosophy such that when electrical faults occur, they are quickly removed from the system, system stability is maintained, and equipment damage is minimized while maintaining proper coordination

  • Investigate and prepare cost effective recommendations for the necessary distribution system expansions and modifications to maintain reliable electrical infrastructure that meets present and future electrical needs

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of engineering analysis software such as CYME to model the distribution system, perform short-circuit calculations, load flow analysis, voltage sag analysis, equipment rating verifications, etc.

  • Perform coordination studies using advanced models and simulations for equipment such as breakers, reclosers, fuses, and other protection devices.

  • Perform power quality studies as needed

  • Perform technical reviews and identify expected system impacts from the interconnection of distributed energy resource (DER) and determine appropriate and cost-effective mitigation measures.

  • Provide field and equipment related support to technicians and other operating personnel as needed

  • Maintain a current knowledge of electric utility rules, technical, administrative and regulatory requirements for reliable, safe operation of the system.

Desired Skills

  • Experience in the planning, modeling, design, project management, and construction of distribution projects is preferred

Job Attributes

Education and experience required

Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required

  • EIT with ability to become registered PE in Texas

  • Two years of applicable electric utility experience preferred

  • Distribution protection work experience preferred

  • Basic understanding of the following principles:

  • Distribution System Reliability

  • Fault interruption, fault isolation, power restoration

  • Protective equipment characteristics

  • Ability to work with moderate supervision

Staff Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required

  • EIT with ability to become registered PE in Texas

  • Four years of applicable electric utility experience preferred

  • Distribution protection work experience preferred

  • Developed understanding of the following principles:

  • Distribution System Reliability

  • Fault interruption, fault isolation, power restoration

  • Protective equipment characteristics

  • Ability to work as an individual contributor, team member or team leader

Senior Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas or ability to become registered PE in Texas is preferred

  • Six years of applicable electric utility experience preferred

  • Distribution protection work experience preferred

  • Proficient understanding of the following principles:

  • Distribution System Reliability

  • Fault interruption, fault isolation, power restoration

  • Protective equipment characteristics

  • Ability to lead, direct, train and motivate others

Measures of success

  • Timely completion of assigned area protection plans, DER and power quality studies

  • Responsive to requests from field personnel for expert guidance/recommendations

  • Creates and develops a collaborative high performing team environment

  • Fosters a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and creativity

  • Effectively manages assigned processes, procedures, and programs from inception to completion while working both independently and with other groups
