Position Summary

As a Substation Civil Design Engineer at Oncor, you’ll design, lead, and oversee engineering responsibilities related to transmission substation civil design. Includes engineering, cost estimate creation, project execution, and material procurement.

This position is based at our 777 Main St – Fort Worth, TX location.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Design, plan, schedule, and coordinate with construction management of the planned projects for the Oncor Electric high voltage system capital projects and ensure that sound engineering and Oncor standards are incorporated.

  • Procure engineering services such as surveying and geotechnical testing to assist in providing the civil design.

  • Produce engineering design drawings for foundations, grading and drainage, erosion control and all civil related items including retaining walls, fencing, masonry walls, ditches, berms culverts minor structural for substation and switching station projects. In accordance with Company practices while meeting appropriate performance standards. This will require the use of engineering disciplines and practices.

  • Prepare budgetary cost estimates and Work Authorizations to obtain financial approval for assigned projects.

  • Prepare bid packages for civil work, set up and lead pre-bid meetings, perform technical evaluations of the resulting civil contractor bids and award bids based on cost and resource availability to complete project as scheduled.

  • Coordinate the construction of assigned projects by staying in close contact with assigned contractor and Oncor’s Construction Management.

  • Communicate, coordinate, and interface with other areas of the Company and with others external to the Company to assure that civil designs and construction practices are appropriate.

  • Utilize engineering design, communication, scheduling, estimating, and word processing computer programs such as MicroStation, Outlook, Microsoft Office products, Autodesk Civil 3D and foundation design programs.

  • Provide design solutions and engineering designs as requested to resolve substation and switching station civil related issues.

  • Provide technical assistance to Transmission operations and maintenance organizations of Oncor.

  • Directs the activities of internal and provide oversight to external personnel to ensure successful completion of foundation, grading, and drainage designs and all civil related items in a timely manner.

  • Reviews civil engineering design drawings from consultants to ensure conformance to Oncor standard design practices.

  • Work with civil construction contractors to improve construction techniques in the civil area.

  • Review and implement new civil engineering products such as various types of screening walls.

  • Serve as project manager for the civil portion of substation and switching station projects.

  • Perform all essential aspects and functions of the job as well as any other specific job requirements.

Skills :

  • Proficient in the use of Transmission Engineering specific computer applications, or demonstrate capability of obtaining proficiency in these applications.

  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Leadership, subject knowledge, and design experience to provide engineering design and coordination services for system wide transmission station projects.

  • Must be flexible, have organizational skills, and multi-tasking skills to handle large volumes of work. This requires setting priorities and designing multiple projects without having full project requirements known.

  • Must possess multi functionality skills to influence changes and effectively work across disciplines and functions to achieve common goals and company business purposes. Capable of working with people of divergent back grounds.

  • Applicant must be technically capable to provide direct technical support to field organizations in restoring service outages caused by equipment failures, weather, miss-operations, and human errors.

Education & Experience :

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil engineering AND 2+ years of related engineering experience required.

Travel :

  • up to 25%
