Job Summary and Qualifications

The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring coordinated delivery of consumer care in accordance with the established standards of care, mental health practice and facility policy, goals and objectives. This position assists in contributing to the facility’s philosophy, objectives, education, and quality improvement efforts, while providing supervision to the nursing staff assigned. The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring appropriate nursing coverage for BHS Units which includes managing staffing schedules, managing staff call-outs, and managing daily staffing needs as they arise. The Nurse Manager may on occasion be responsible for working the unit as the Charge Nurse.

  • Responsible for day to day operations and leadership of BH patient care units.

  • Assumes overall operational responsibility for assigned shift. Provides leadership on assigned shift through making assignments consistent with experience, competency and mix of staff. Assumes role of “charge” nurse and/or delegates various tasks to staff RN’s.*

  • Maintains a competent staff through working with the Program Director to assess staffing needs and by facilitating unit orientation for new staff. Provides coaching, teaching, evaluating and counseling to unit based staff and assisting with the same for flexi staff. Deals with staff performance issues in a timely manner.*

  • Performs and/or provides supervision to assure the completion of admission and shift RN assessments.*

  • Plans treatment in conjunction with other treatment team members. Assures an initial treatment plan is initiated at admission and in collaboration with the assigned Clinical Care Manager assures an interdisciplinary treatment plan is formulated within 72 hours and reviewed and revised according to policy.*

  • Provides and/or supervises direct physical patient care. Assures staff is competent to provide assigned patient treatments and procedures. If indicated, facilitates additional staff education to increase competancy.*

  • Provides and/or supervises provision of behavioral health care interventions utilizing the least restrictive interventions.*

  • Administers and/or assures appropriate medication administration using the 5 rights of medication administration. Maintains accurate medication administration documentation including accurate documentation and signatures on controlled substance forms. Identifies trends with medication, or documentation errors and facilitates corrective action.*

  • Provides for provision of safety measures for patients, visitors and staff. Assures all staff perform routine and special safety checks and manage and check hazards according to policy.*

  • Provides and/or assures the provision of patient/family education and facilitation of community meetings and educational/focus groups as appropriate to assigned unit.*

  • Actively participates in quality management activities including facilitating corrective action for operational, staff or quality concern situations requiring immediate attention and/or timely reporting of same.*

  • Assumes responsibility for completing all mandatory educational, PPD, CPR, CPI and RN licensure requirements within designated time frame and for providing written verification of same for filing.*

  • Uses the Meditech order entry system for all functions utilized including, but not limited to, entering admission data, transfers, discharges, orders for diagnostic testing, accessing results of diagnostic testing and sending messages to other departments. Routinely accesses e-mail to read messages.*

  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and follows policy/procedure, and regulatory requirements for all hospital patient safety initiatives.*

  • Reports to work as pre-scheduled and on time. Identifies and deals with staff attendance issues in a timely manner.*

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Current licensure as an RN in the state of Virginia.

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers through the AHA or CPR through the American Red Cross

  • CPI certification within 30 days of hire.

  • BSN degree from an accredited college or university is required.

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred:

  • 3 or more years of acute care Behavioral Health nursing experience.

  • At least 2 years of Med/Surg or ICU nursing experience in a clinical setting

  • One or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
