UL, LLC VP, Principal Engineering - Consumer Testing, Inspection, Certification in Fremont, California

This role provides technical leadership for UL Solutions Consumer Testing, Inspection and Certification Segment and Customer Operating Units (COU) globally, driving and balancing the multiple strategic objectives of globalization, new offering creation, technical competency, training and quality. Increasing collaboration across the business while fostering a winning and customer focused culture.

  • Develops strategic plan(s) for Consumer Testing, Inspection, Certification (TIC) Principal Engineering team to align to and support organizational and Segment level strategies. Translates business strategy into technical requirements, planning for future technical needs and creating a strategy to develop/acquire technical expertise in new and growing business areas.

  • Drives technical leadership to meet regulatory product compliance in all desired markets in close collaboration with UL Solutions Chief Scientist.

  • Leading global Principal Engineering team to develop standards, testing & certification programs and businesses.

  • Oversees development and maintenance of consistent and technically appropriate certification requirements in UL Standards and Outlines of Investigations as well as Certification Requirement Decisions, Practical Application Guidelines (PAGs), Laboratory Procedural Guides, Standardized Appendix Pages (SAPs), Follow-up Inspection Instructions (FUIIs) and other standard specific ancillary documents to provide for consistent interpretation and application of requirements for UL Solutions product certification services.

  • Defines and implements a global growth strategy including strategic technology roadmaps and targeting new business opportunities in existing or new markets.

  • Defines the technical training strategy and leads the implementation to ensure the Segment has the right technical skills and abilities internally to meet the needs of our customers and strengthen engagement and development of our technical employees.

  • Drives the development and / or reviews the technical content that serves as the basis of training programs to ensure appropriate and consistent application of requirements. implement a global growth strategy, targeting new business opportunities in existing or new markets.

  • Responsible for Testing, Inspection, Certification Consumer Segment level projects such as technical competency model, Components Acceptance Program, as well as supporting the TIC Sustainability strategy and execution plans for each segment.

  • Oversee and understand TIC industry and developments.

  • Provide support and direction for specific challenges that have major impact on the business.

  • Oversee internal continuous improvement projects to improve efficiency.

  • Leverages lean principles to ensure the global Principal Engineering team’s structure and processes are focused on improving team effectiveness.

  • Ensure the right talent is in place to support the needs of the business.

  • Ensure operations can deliver on new initiatives, major technical changes.

  • Attend Leadership Meetings, present business plan and strategy.

  • Incorporate Board and TIC Leadership Team feedback on strategy and actions.

  • Build personal relationships and establish credibility with peers and stakeholders.

  • Regularly interact with key customers as top technical representative of TIC Consumer to understand customer needs, bring standards and regulatory knowledge, and solutions.

  • Leads and engages with external councils, code authorities, government agencies, etc. to represent UL Solutions technical expertise and interests

  • Attend industry events and network with customers and key stakeholders

  • BS, Engineering, MS preferred.

  • 20+ years experience in a related role with global leadership experience.

  • Technical and Innovative; ability to develop, implement and support strategies.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to drive growth through various business models - TIC as well as software/digital.

  • Ability to execute (e.g., going beyond the talk to making something happen).

  • In depth knowledge of Industry standards and services.

  • Detailed knowledge of UL Solutions operations and technical vocabulary common to involved categories.

  • Experience with complex customer interactions, products, and services.

  • Experience with AI, Sustainability Software Engineering, Functional Safety.

  • Track record of building strong people/teams.

  • Global experience (culture, market, business practices, etc.).

  • Experience leading significant organizational changes.

  • Experience with product R&D or product development in related consumer industries.

  • Experience working with and key industry, regulatory or government bodies such as the EPA, FDA, AHAM, CPSC, etc.

  • Technical, strategic thinker who leads the change in the market

Total Rewards: The salary range for this position is $ 202,000 - $269,000 and is based upon years of experience that is commensurate with the level of the position.

All employees at UL Solutions are eligible for annual bonus compensation. The target for this position is 40% of the base salary offered. Additionally, executive level employees are eligible for annual long-term incentive. The target for this position is 50% of the base salary offered. Employees are eligible for health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental & financial health; a monthly executive allowance and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country, for the relevant position level.

We also provide employees with paid time off including vacation (25 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
