Summary The incumbent serves as the Maintenance Supervisor for Engineering Service with the VA Central California Health Care System, supervising a range of up to 20 employees at any given time that include Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC/R, Locksmith, Carpenters, and Painters. Responsibilities Major duties include:Plans, directs, lays out, assigns, coordinates and supervises work performed by Carpenters, Plumbers, Painters, Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanics, and Electricians. This includes having an extensive knowledge of all maintenance, repair, preventative maintenance and contract management of Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC/R, Locks, Carpentry and Paint of all buildings and structures. Incumbent is also responsible for Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC/R, Lock, Carpentry and Paint work that is accomplished by contractor's labor force, manufacturer's representatives, and specialists called in to perform work that cannot be accomplished by VA staff. The Maintenance Supervisor reviews and oversees the work of contractors and other trade specialists to ensure compliance with the terms of the contract. The Maintenance Supervisor actively works with, as well as supervises, a team of up to 20 employees. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is both outside and inside in areas of medium to excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness and chilling areas that have intermittent noise, dust, fumes, grease, dirt and oils with exposure to live electrical lines. Areas may be slippery and/or uneven surfaces, in equipment rooms, tunnels, crawl spaces, confined spaces, penthouses, overhead catwalks, scaffolding and/or in tight areas such as manholes and electrical equipment closets. The incumbent is occasionally subject to very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous working conditions and must be in satisfactory physical and mental condition and fit for duty at all times. Work requires good coordination and good physical condition. Required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl and work in uncomfortable positions and to pull, push, reach over the shoulder and lift supplies and/or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Must have rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, good hearing, depth perception and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
