This is an Other Personnel Service (OPS) Environmental Health Specialist position working part-time with the Department of Health in Lee County.

This is a part-time Environmental Health Specialist position that will perform duties under the direction of the Environmental Manager with the Environmental Health and Engineering Section of the Florida Department of Health in Lee County. As a member of the Environmental Public Health Team, you will be directly involved in protecting, promoting, and improving the health of all residents and visitors in Florida.

The team member will perform inspections and enforcement in the following primary program areas (based upon priorities):

  • Biomedical Waste

  • Drinking Water Systems

  • Healthy Beaches

  • Public Swimming Pools

  • Tattooing

  • Wastewater Treatment Systems

    Additional program areas: Group Care, Migrant Farmworker Housing, Mobile Home/RV Parks, and Tanning.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.

  • Ability to understand, interpret & apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to environmental programs.

  • Ability to frequently bend, kneel, reach, and sit or stand for long periods of time.

  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.

  • Incumbent will be assigned a county vehicle and will be responsible for maintaining and operating the vehicle per state and county regulations.

    Minimum Qualifications Required:

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent.

    Minimum Qualifications Preferred:

  • Knowledge of field equipment including but not limited to, free and total chlorine test kit, pool test kit, soil probe, thermometer, and light meter.

  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.

    Other Job Related Requirements:

  • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

  • Valid Florida driver license
